Yes, like brother Izso mentioned, Chinese belief is any creature or insect etc., that visits the house after the death of a family member or within a few days a visit to deceased home at night.
My friend's grandma who walking with a limp always try to hold onto something as she walks, so most of the time when she walks pass the hall she holds onto the chairs and so on. When she passed away and on the night of the visit, where all family members were told to stay in their room at a given time, my friend's room which was next to the hall, he could hear the chair screeching against the floor as if someone holding onto them......:hmmmm:

There are many stories of strange phenomenon of the deceased night of their visit. When my grandma passed away, my family and I did the same thing too...all were in a room for the rest of the night. But 1 thing keeping me puzzled until now actually. If the deceased family member is coming back for a visit, why do we have to hide in a room? Its not that they will harm us. 1 of the reason given was that the deceased will be afraid to enter the house if we're there or if he sees us. But errr..we're a family, no?

talking about dream.. when I was about 8 years old I dream of a coffin in a house and my uncle is like talking to those ppl that come visit. I look that the photo that display the face of the person that passed away and the photo is blank no face is the photo frame. Until When I was 11 years old I saw the same picture that I dream of it and it was my grand father that passed away with the coffin in my uncle house and with my grand father picture display infront of the coffin and my uncle is talking to those that come paid their last respect to him. At that time I was shock and I also told this to my mum at the wrong time and I get scold for not telling her. Until now I still remember the picture of that in my head... really sad... I love my grand father very much... some times if I think back I feel like crying...

ever since that day every dream that I dream of will come true one by one... even my previous and current company I did dream of before I am being hired to work there...

May ur grandpa RIP. He'll always be with you now, protecting you.

Btw, if you have any 4 digits in dream or dream of striking a lottery...would you mind to share?

Ha...I would love to dream one but God stop me from dreaming those numbers...hahaha... Actually I realize that this is a give from God to me to know what is my next step to do and where to go. Is like a communication tool Him... but recently I did not dream of anything except the one that I dream about I when back to a place where I when there before in my dreams(not in real life)and meat this black figure rushing towards me and bang wake up... So now I am scared that this will really happen but dont know when...

Just remembered about this dream story. Last 1991, I attend a computer training in Singapore for 1 week. I met this Malaysian Chinese guy who also attend same training together with others from Hongkong and Indonesia. We talk lot of things until we discuss about our religion. He told me that before that he have a motorcycle accident and comatosed in hospital for a week. His mother was very worried and always on his bedside. Her mother fall asleep in his bedside and dreamed that she was infront the door of Catholic Church and she saw his son inside the church. She want to enter the church but the priest will not let her in. The priest told her. If you want to save your son. You must change places or situation with your son. Her mother agreed to the priest just to save him.
Then my friend wake up from comatose and call her mother whose sleeping with tears in her eyes. He ask his why she is crying and her mother told him about she dreamed in the church. He told her that how can you describe those inside the church and the priest. We never been in catholic Church because were Buddhist.
From that time on. Their family becomes Catholic. His surname was Lim. How come most of the surname of Malaysian and Singaporean was Lim? LOL

Since the recent demised of my father in law, many of my wife's cousin came all the way to pay their respect. So while they were around, they referred back to their own parents demise and many stories came out. This can explain your question above.
If Buddhist, the house will have some prayer altar of some gods. If the demised person wants to visit, the family have to pray to the god on the night of their return, for permission to allow them in. Some food will be placed as offering. Here is why the family members are told not to be there when they come back. The family member cannot come back themselves and have to be escorted. So it is not that we cannot meet the family member but not to meet the others......:hmmmm:

Lim, Tan, Chin, Lee are the most surname in Malaysia and Singapore...for Chinese.

As far as I know Lim is not in the list. Not sure now, but Tan, Lee, Wong, Ho and Cheong those days are the top 5

By the way. I'm also a chinese. My mother always remind us that whenever we came from a funeral. We must not directly go back to our home. We must first stop to other places to drink or eat before going home. This is to avoid bringing home "ghost" from funeral or cemetery.
We still practice it just to be sure.:hmmmm:

Over here in Malaysia, the chinese usually wash theirselves with water mixed with some flowers inside..It is believe to "cleanse" away the unwanted things..

Yes, a pail of water with flowers will be prepared, but this usually will be prepared at the temple if sent for cremation. At burial site usually not done, but will be ready at the home of the deceased family. They cleanse before entering their homes.
For others, normally when we reach home we wash our hands and feet before entering our homes....

Some stories from my wife's cousin side. Family of 1st. Uncle....
Their mother passed away, but the husband being a non believer, did not pray to the gods to allow the visit. On the night of supposed visit, my wife's cousin brother (eldest boy and mother's favorite) felt her presence outside his room window in his dream.
For the father who passed away last year, this time the daughter prayed for permission of his visit. The last few years of the father's life he was bed ridden and was taken care off by this youngest daughter. On the night of the supposed visit, she dreamed that he came back and hugged her before leaving......:hmmmm:

My sister did told me that after my grand mother passed away there is one night when she is going upstairs to her bed room she heard the same sound like my grand mother climbing the stairs and make like iron scratching sound from the stairs handle. That night my sister is the last to went to bed and she is the last to off all the light downstairs.... That time I was at Seremban studying...

Yea...i remembered prayers to allow the deceased to enter the premise. And if not mistaken, we covered the altars with a piece of cloth. And also covered anything that is red.

Usually when I visit a funeral, my mom would ask me to keep 1 or 2 "fatt fung kum" leaves inside the pocket. Then throw it afterwards when Im back. Sorry I dont know wat's the English or Malay name for the plant lol

Post picture. LOL

Here in Philippines. Sometimes we can sense that a ghost of a friend and relative was around if we can smell smoke of candle or smell of Kalachuchi flower use in funeral.

Been reading this thread for a few months, so exciting, haha but i know it's gonna get more exciting during the hungry ghost festival coming soon.

Speaking of smell, there was one night long time ago, it was after midnight and i got up from bed because suddenly wanna go to the toilet. My room is very close to the toilet and the moment i step out of my room i can smell the joss stick smell. The smell is at around the distance between outside of my room and outside of the toilet. Fyi, none of my family members light up joss stick at late night so it's impossible the smell is coming from the altar. After that i just tried to finish my pee as fast as i can and go back to my room.

The next day i woke up and think to myself was there 'anything' there where the smell was detected?

Actually , that's my upcoming problem. I'm in charge of closing doors in our garment at 12 midnight. This was the area that ghost of an old man in white t-shirt appears every month of august. I have no choice to face in this area because I have to place the chain and lock on wooden screen on left side of picture.:bawling:
But I never saw the ghost. Our sewer working in overtime saw this ghost. But I can sense his presence and sometimes I hear him going up the stair that I'm standing taking this picture.

I think it is the "pomelo" leaves. Even in Wiki listed....
>>>The Chinese use pomelo leaves in a ritual bath, which they believe helps to cleanse a person and repel evil.

Wah! you working time until midnight?
Anyway, to what I know, the hungry ghost month are for those soul with no one taking care of them, means no offerings and what not, so they are release to roam specially on that month. That is why we pray and make offering on the road side to them. I am not sure why there is one in your shop.....

Another thing is if you believe you have strong "chi" nothing will have the 'power' to disturb you. I don't know what 'chi' is literally but it somehow translates to "life force energy". Usually when you are feeling down, having a lot of bad luck, etc, that's when your chi is the lowest.

So if you have ways to improve and boost your chi, you'll never see or experience these 'things'. That's what I believe anyway.

Speaking of offerings, I think I mentioned before but respect 'them' and they'll leave you alone. Which is why in most mountain hikes that I go to - especially the tougher ones, I always make it a point to leave fruit offerings or something for safe passage.

This was formerly a residential house probably built last 1950. They were other family who lived in this house before us. After my father died, we converted this house into garment and my mother and sister move to another residence. I'm in charge as caretaker and therefore my wife and my daughter reside here.

I'm not sure if its my father's ghost. Because he also always wear white t-shirt. But my mother and sister visit his grave every week or month until now for almost 12 years. Maybe its another one.:hmmmm:

Maybe. I have to go along with my mother to their next visit of my father's grave.:hmmmm: LOL

Like bro. Izso mentioned about the chi, yours must be high because you are not the one seeing it, but your sewer did.
Maybe since you did not visit your father's grave, he came to visit you.....:hmmmm:
