Yo bro... been away lately huh??

latest news (not so latest lah) on proton-petronas thingy to those who missed it...

Proton, Petronas In Engine Alliance

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- Proton Holdings Bhd has signed a memorandum of intent (MOI) with national oil company, Petronas to develop larger engines and environmentally friendly alternative fuel system for use by Malaysia's national automaker.

The MOI will see both parties collaborating and exploring the possibilities of further developing Petronas engines, particularly the compatibility of its E01 engine to Proton's motor vehicles, and the subsequent potential commercialisation of the engine, said Proton in a statement.

In addition, the collaboration will also see Proton and Petronas working together in developing a Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) system for Proton's use.

Proton's managing director, Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohd Tahir said the collaboration is very beneficial as it meets the objectives of both parties.

"The partnership will fulfil Petronas' desire to further embark on the development and commercialisation of the E01 engine technology, and for Proton, we get to introduce a larger engine capacity of between 1.8 to 2.2 liters and an environmentally friendly vehicle in our future cars," he said.

He said this was a significant partnership, as it is the collaboration between two government linked companies to leapfrog in technology via the sharing of both the companies resources and knowledge.

"Proton will be able to tap into Petornas' ready to use engine technology capacity in the most cost efficient manner and within the shortest timeframe possible. It also allows us to further strengthen Malaysia's capability in the auto arena," he said.

Syed Zainal said in the competitive global market, Petronas' intellectual property in the E01 engine will go a long way in contributing to Proton's innovation and new product line up.

just some of my views :

i dont think that proton's partnership will help to solve Mitsubishi's crisis. Do you think a company like proton that is already in trouble can have enough financial support to help mitsu out of their problem? it may contribute/help a bit but definitely will not solve mitsu's problem. sales is bad for mitsu, they are losing out like hell in the world's biggest auto market - USA, selling of technology to proton will not be making more money than selling of their own products. so the only way to save mitsu is still on their own effort to boost up sales....

and this new boss of proton is not a stupid guy, if perodua can be where they are today in the local market, there must be some capability in this man. he will not be so dumb to pay a big chunk of money to mitsu and buy tehcnology just to save proton?? .... both mitsu n proton are in trouble, so hopefully it will be a hand-in-hand partnership and both moving forward together....

1 wishful thinking -- maybe we can soon see evo coming out at lower price??? hehehee... Proton Evolusi with 2.0 turbo, 4wd?? heheheee....

better joint venture with petronas than mitsu, mitsu just wanna use proton...

I dont think Proton is dumb enough to be used by Mitsubishi though.

Both news sounds good. If Proton is able to make the best out of the partnerships Im sure there is a future...

By the way. The E01 at its highest spec can rival Honda's K20 series. I want one.

so, do we pay royalty again for every single mitsubishi platform/engine?

I seriously doubt this. VW has the reputation of saving car companies, mitsubishi...uhhh....anybody read the financial times lately?

anyways, still hoping to see prices and trade barriers come down.

This is the last chance for Proton within this 2 years. 2008 will be the LAST AFTA year(it's supposed to be 2005). Yes, that's right, other countries can't tolerate Malaysia policy anymore.

2 years is very short in a car industry. I doubt Proton can do anything to improve its reputation.

Most car companies spend around 5 years from R&D to publish a car model. Proton takes longer by certain "unknown" reasons.

Some might say the country's economy will go down along the fall of Proton. Yes, it might be true, but it's very temporary. Other car companies will buy Proton assembly plants to build their car parts too. But I hope Proton choose a right time to fall since some northern countries have cheaper labor than Malaysia. By the time Proton is owned by other companies, we'll see some equal opportunities in the higher management level positions.

Conclusion, I don't see any bright future in both Proton and Mitsubishi.

Remember Proton slogan??
Build in Malaysia!! Build for Malaysians!!!

See, their initial marketing plan is targetting Malaysians ONLY.

proton pls bring back the good old days of the evo 3...really like the car....

The way i see it, TM was a 2 inch piping choking a big ass turbo engine. Still, we have to give it, 5 years? 10? before we can see anything 'soulful' out of the M'sian camp, as Jeremy clarkson like to put it

we will get rebadged mitsubishi like new eterna, colt and lancer.

the Lancer will be known as The New Wira, Eterna as The New Perdana (or maybe Timbalan?) and Colt maybe known as The New Tiara.

Mitsubishi may sell rebadged Protons in the Land of Sun Rise.

Gen2 maybe known as Lancer Cyborg.

Waja as the Debonair (in Chancellor spec).

Savvy maybe sold as a whole new model and quoted as "My First Lotus".

proton is struggling really bad. if Proton cars are too expensive to be sold in China, Indonesia and Thailand, proton must find quick ways of making them cheaper.

Get a Waja 1.6 Manual, throw away EFI and use carb instead. drum brakes instead discs rear. no need fog lamps. use steel wheels, not alloys. throw all the power windos, power mirrors, power door locks - even radio.

if they can prepare such waja at RM20K (not incl tax), believe me it will sell in countries mentioned above. just try it. there is no point also selling things when it is made at sub standard qualities and not appreciated by kampung folks in Sulawesi who just wants a medium of transportation.

NOTHING ELSE.

SORRY BRO...
Im not updated.. hehehe

the pro on this ~ short term~ new models from mitsui to fill gaps on proton models.
(hope it sells on merit & not squezzed outa from us)
product line maybe a proton SUV (grandis?), a proton MPV.

the cons out of this. short cuts like this will mean proton falls back in the learning curve. the next 5-8 years car manufacturers knowlege on hybrids/alternate technolgy will escalate even faster.

someone in proton must learn to crack the whip. it will do the whole of malaysia a world of good.

i totally agree with kool.this would make proton more dependant and will refuse to learn more...instead..wants to be spoon fed.

we've seen this happen rite?:_: look at perodua..they're doing really well.they had their share of partnerships.at least they actually became a better car manufacturer.

actually perodua isnt that fast in learning. They havents an own-self-developed-car yet. more or less been slapping a toyota part.

In that by shipping malaysian personnels to japan to contribute on the MYVI development should (i hope) lead to malaysian to realise the "true" concept of "WE CAN" & not mere echos of a money-grabbing politicians . time will tell if perodua shifts to the mould of "malaysian product" in proper sense.

We need to move butts

true.they dont have their self developed cars yet..but i still feel that the cars produced are much better than protons.in terms of quality..:_:
in other words..perodua is a step ahead of proton

at least the pero2 i driving still in 1 piece for 2 and a half years.. well just hv to sit back n see wat they can bring to us..

how did they manage to gorek the perodua "man" over to proton is a wonderful move.. story getting really interesting now.. i meant new VW models this year and also mitsubishi can produce its own model in malaysia manufacturer plant... cool..
