Rather than focusing on traditional luxury elements, the EX90 gained attention for its approach to safety, sustainability and smart systems. Just after its Malaysian launch, the fully electric Volvo EX90 has been named the 2024 World Luxury Car at the World Car Awards. It was selected by a panel of 96 automotive journalists from 24 countries based on design, innovation and advanced tech features.

Tech-focused design with a minimalist touch

The EX90 is built around a central computing system powered by NVIDIA DRIVE, with Volvo’s in-house software managing everything from navigation to driver assistance. It supports over-the-air updates, which allow improvements to systems and features after purchase.

Lidar and sensors for extended safety

This is Volvo’s first model equipped with lidar as standard. The system is mounted on the roof and can detect obstacles up to 250 metres ahead, even in low-light conditions. According to Volvo, this can help reduce severe accidents by up to 20 percent.

Interior monitoring and driver awareness

The Driver Understanding System uses cameras and sensors to monitor the driver’s condition, checking for signs of fatigue or distraction. If necessary, the car can intervene by slowing down or stopping. The feature was included in TIME’s Best Inventions of 2024.

Occupant detection using radar

A radar system in the cabin monitors movement to help prevent occupants from being left behind. If someone is detected after the car is locked, it will issue alerts and keep the cabin ventilated. The system is designed to address risks related to children or pets accidentally left in the vehicle.

Simple, tech-heavy cabin setup

Inside, the EX90 features a large 14.5-inch vertical touchscreen paired with a digital driver display. Controls are streamlined and designed for ease of use, and a head-up display helps reduce distractions.

Availability in Malaysia

The EX90 is priced at RM442,888 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM442,648 in Sabah and Sarawak. The price includes five years of digital services, roadside assistance and an unlimited mileage warranty, with an eight-year warranty for the high-voltage battery. First 50 units will receive a wallbox charger and sunshade, worth RM5,000 in total.
