Hello guys,

Looking for advice/suggestion on car to purchase. I know this is one of the most common thread in ZTH but oh well...

I actually can't make up my mind whether to get a used car or a new car for
My priorities are :-

- Cabin space to comfortably carry 4-5 adults around.
- Auto tranny only.
- For my parents' sake, would prefer a car than a SUV for ease of getting in and out of the car.
- Fuel consumption is not really a concern but of course not a fuel guzzler but no-go kinda car.
- Don't really need a MPV either (hardly needs to bring huge items).
- Not more than 3 years old for used car.

Currently in my mind are:-
- Used Inspira 2.0P
- Used Sylphy 2.0
- Used Teana 250XV V6
- Used Camry 2.0 (unless lucky enough to get 2.4 within that budget)
- New City (anyone knows when the Hybrid version will be out?)

Would really appreciate owners to give their reviews on their cars.
Any other suggestions will be very much appreciated.

subaru forester SG9 (2.5 turbo awd) :driver:

or the smaller cc 2.0 (stil turbo) ::driver:

Used Sylphy 2.0, very comfortable and spacious. Wait for bro. Izso to comment further......:driver:

Bro pomen,
Prefer a normal comfort car. My era of vroom vroom and bishhh bishhh is over. Hehe...

6ue5t,
Nothing more than RM100k...forgot to put it into the first post.

Vr2turbo,
I actually put Sylphy into my list after reading bro Izso's posts regarding his Sylphy haha.

Either Nissans. Comfort and spaciousness trumps the other contenders. If you don't need all the space all the time I'd say take the STD over the Teana.

ixeo,
STD? I haven't tried sitting in a Sylphy before. Only sat in Teana once and was in love with it's comfort since then. Couldn't afford the new 250XV or else that will definitely be my choice.

Agree with ixeo, out of your list, take either of the Nissans. If don't need a big car then just take the Sylphy which is much cheaper than the Teana but still very comfortable as well.
Camry is also comfortable but don't get a car that size with only a puny 2.0ltr NA engine! With less than rm100k you can still get Camry 2.4ltr but still much more expensive than Teana so not worth it.
Another choice can be the Accord 2.4ltr which is in between Teana & Camry prices of the same year (2011-2012).

Those are the common choices. If you're willing to be a bit more adventurous with a slightly older car (2007-2008) then I can recommend another one which is much faster and a bit more fun than all those above but yet offers almost the same comfort and reliability. ;)

Sonata 2.0?

Camry, best reliability, best resale value
Accord, best handling, biggest cabin size, VTEC!!!!!
Sonata..laugh until balls explode.

Bro 6ue5t,
No go for me for cars over 3 years old. Don't want any headaches with car repairs anymore hehe. I was actually considering the Mark X 2011-2012 but gotta stretch the budget pretty far hence have to remove it from the list.

Bro Danz,
Tried checking prices for Camry 2.4 but still going quite expensive for 2012 unit. I tried the Accord before but didn't like it's interior. I don't think it is comfortable either. Sonata...even though I haven't sat in one, I'm very concerned with the reliability of kimchi cars.

Btw, anyone own the Teana 2.5 V6 would like to share the issues with the car? What I heard is the rear suspension is kinda struggling to support the weight of the car.

You read my mind or what? Mark X is exactly the car I want to suggest to you! I'm driving a 2008 one now everyday for the last 2.5yrs and I can say the car is very reliable and much better than any of your choices.

I still prefer the 06-11 model, the current camry looks ugly.
Hyundai offered me Rm27k discount for their pre reg model, I was tempted but im leaning more towards camry or accord. but lastly ended up with a BMW

6ue5t,
I have driven my friend's Mark X 2011 Sport package model, I must say it's one hell of a car!
If I'm not mistaken, the 2010 Relax model is going for about 120-130k for unregistered units.
But oh well, I really don't wanna get anymore headache from repairs. Btw, the rear legroom was pretty small for a car this size.
It's more of a driver's car than a passenger's car I'd say.

DanzEterna,
Gotta agree with you that the older Camry looks much better than the current model.
Still don't have that much confidence to go for Kimchi made cars. Maybe another few years down the road, when they have a better proven record then I'll consider :)

I think all that's left is for you to test drive the STD and the Teana. Frankly speaking the Teana J32 look like crap now that the L33 is out. I'd pick the STD frankly. That being said you might dig the VQ25DE, I wouldn't want to pay that much road tax on something that looks that horrendous.

The 2.5 V6 is a monster of a car. Prepare to feed it lots of petrol. But it's a beast of a cruise machine. Suspension has been known to wear out faster but probably because of its torque. You'll be doing a lot of frog jumping and nose diving. Personally I like this car but I think it's overkill. And I cannot completely get over the fugly looks of the older Teana models. The new car however that's much better.

Here's my opinion on these cars as a family man as priority and as a car buff.

- Used Inspira 2.0P

I've never quite liked the torque (or lack of) for this car. But this car has one up over the rest of the selection and that's the paddle shifters. It's not much useful unless you're alone and driving on track. Uphill it'll struggle and I'm comparing it with my Sylphy.

The rear bench seats are mildly adequate but better than a Vios. That's not saying much though. Lastly the car has a lot of parts going for it in ways of Lancers and Inspiras, so in some respect the maintenance is relatively cheap. Not cheap cheap, ok-cheap.

- Used Sylphy 2.0

I'm assuming you're talking about the G11 model and not the newer models. The G11 model is the same one I have and it's got 2 inherent problems :

1. The gearbox overheats. But that's if you're speeding 160km/h for more than 30 minutes. That was the only way I got it to overheat. I drove the car in stop-start conditions, cruising within legal speed limits, uphill downhill driving, all no problem. Problem easily solved with one CVT gearbox adaptor and ATF cooler. Newer B11/17 and all come with it built in.

2. The brakes are inadequate. But that's probably because I upsized to 17". With good brake pads it's actually quite good just that I wanted more. Easy remedy since Skyline R32/34 are almost pnp into this car.

Technically the above isn't really a problem if you're a sensible driver and keep everything stock. Btw, the stock 195/60/15 is super comfortable. Don't change this tyre size if you want to maintain the magic carpet-ish type of ride comfort. I made a mistake of going 215/45/17 and even with stock suspension it's bumpy. Acceptable bumpy but bumpy nonetheless.

FC will range between 9km/L to 12km/L depending on how the previous owner ran-in the car. Mine is a problem because the previous owner was a slowpoke so I've yet to get more than 11km/L on mine, which translates to about 420km on a 40L tank (actually I pump only about 37-38L each fill. 40L is almost empty tank). There are other owners in the club that hit 600km city/highway driving and they hit this mark quite regularly.

Space is incomparable. Nothing in your list has as much space than this Sylphy except the Teana. My Sylphy has incredible amount of legroom for both front and back passengers. I've tried pushing the front seat all the way back and the rear legroom was still a lot, even for a 6ft passenger. The rear boot space is enough to fit 2 of me comfortably and stack bags on top and I'm 90kg 175cm tall.

The 2.0L engine is not a slouch and everything is designed for long life. Long life spark plugs, long life cvt gear oil, cvt gear chain, engine timing chain, there's very little maintenance needed. But being a Nissan, parts are not exactly cheap and being a Nissan the engine is somewhat complicated. You probably read about my complaints about replacing spark plugs requiring intake manifold to be removed right?

You'll probably need to get used to the length of the car though. It's quite a long car.

- Used Teana 250XV V6

Nice car, powerful car, fuel guzzler and damn spacious. Highway cruise machine. City drive the fuel consumption will kill you.

- Used Camry 2.0 (unless lucky enough to get 2.4 within that budget)

Top or one of the top 5 most stolen cars in KL. And ridiculously expensive because of its high resale value. My friend bought a 5 year old 2.0 for 105k from the official Toyota used reseller (forgot the name). That's insane la. I personally don't like this car.

- New City (anyone knows when the Hybrid version will be out?)

Amongst your list this car is probably going to last you the longest. If you buy, don't buy the S or S+ spec. Buy the V or G spec. Pretty impressive rear legroom but loses out to the Sylphy. Very frugal with the petrol, very good to drive for a 1.5 and I don't say this lightly - it's a better drive than the Vios and Polo Sedan. Loaded with enough safety features to get you out of almost any situation it's probably the safest car in your list.

I like this car. I only wish it was a 2.0.

Then either go Civic, or transfer Civic engine in.....hhahahahhahahahha:biggrin:

Inspira 2.0P has terrible road noise for its class. If buying "new", for the price, its unbeatable. When buying used you have a lot of choices, like the STD.

Bro ixeo,
No doubt the new Teana is the bomb. I assume STD = Sylphy? I'm trying to find out more info about this car. Unfortunately the new Sylphy doesn't have 2.0L. I'm not sure if the 1.8L has enough power to pull the car.

Bro Izso,
Sorry I'm not familiar with the chassis code of Sylphy, what's the manufactured year for G11? Have you compared your G11 to the current model 1.8L Sylphy?
I haven't sat in the G11 neither in the new City.
Thanks for the detailed explanation. Gotta go for some test drives before I decide. Yeah, unfortunately the City doesn't have 1.8L or 2.0L heart. I'm actually hoping to try the City hybrid but no news on it's launch yet.

forester with stock suspension is a comfort car......just most owner swap with firmer aftermarket adjustable suspension
