Malaysia engine preview

With 72% of the lap spent at full throttle, Sepang is now one of the most demanding engine circuits of the year - this is the third highest value encountered all season, and represents a significant change to the V10 era. This is because of the high number of high-speed corners on the circuit. Given that the V8 engines have less power than their predecessors, this means that the drivers will spend more time on the throttle than last year.

The operating range of the engine is not particularly demanding at this circuit, as the engine is rarely used at very low revs. However, the high speed sections can pose their own particular problems, particularly through turns 5 and 6. The drivers use partial throttle openings at high revs on this part of the circuit, and if this is not properly managed, it can result in a phenomenon named 'blow-by' which can damage both the pistons and piston-rings, with gas escaping from the combustion chamber.

More so than in Bahrain, we will once again have to contend with the acoustic offset caused by the high temperatures. The higher temperatures, and thus lower air density, modify the intake acoustics, and mean that maximum power is produced at higher engine speeds than at lower temperatures. This means the operating range is pushed higher than usual.

If we need to use higher engine revs in order to extract maximum performance from the engine, this will require an increase in the already significant cooling capacity at this circuit. As always, the compromise on cooling will be between keeping the oil and water temperatures within their specified limits, and sacrificing a minimum amount of performance in order to achieve this.

yeah saturday can watch tv but not live on sepang!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hope can win ok msc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry dude, Michael will take a 10 place penalty. I'm not saying he can't win but Ferrari are know for their bullet proof engines. This time around, it'll be hard but we know what Michael is capable.

Unless their respective teams discover engine problems after today's qualifying session, it seems certain that Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella has secured the third pole position of his career, that the Roman shares the front row with Jenson Button in the Honda and that Nico Rosberg will start his second ever Formula One Grand Prix from the second row of the grid in third place.

However, behind this trio, the picture is somewhat confusing, because so many drivers have had to change engines and take the various penalties that this involves. Both Ferrari drivers are among those affected by the obvious reliability issues with the new V8 engines. Felipe Massa started the weekend with a fresh engine after a fault was detected after the race at the Sakhir track. This automatically meant a ten place penalty on the grid. However, further signs of engine trouble meant the team decided that the Brazilian would have a further engine change on race morning, thus starting from the back of the grid, with the advantage of a fresh engine, extra sets of tyres and freedom to choose fuel loads.

Michael Schumacher also required an engine change prior to qualifying. He actually set the fourth quickest time which will see him drop ten places and start fourteenth. These changes turn row 2 into an all Williams-Cosworth affair, with Mark Webber joining Rosberg.

And the third row features both McLaren-Mercedes, with Juan Pablo Montoya fifth ahead of Kimi Raikkonen.

Michael Schumacher's penalty would have put him 14th behind Ralf Schumacher, David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello. However that trio of drivers have also incurred engine penalties and will start from the back of the grid. Michael Schumacher therefore will start tenth.
not a bad decision to swap engine for Schumi, drop 6 places for a fresh engine.
but it raise a big question mark for Ferrari engine's reliability, with 3 out of 4 Ferrari engine on the grid changed from Bahrain to Malaysia.

Let's see how Renault engine (which both carry from Bahrain race) perform tomorrow.

Yeah, not very interesting but it wasn't uneventful.

Kimi, has there been anyone as consistently unlucky as he has been. He needs to consult some Fengshui master or something. Thanks Klien, thanks a fucking lot.

Renault continues where they left off last season. Still the best overall package.

Jenson continues to be an also ran.

Ferrari wasn't very impressive. Did they flatter to deceive in Bahrain?

Montoya is useless. Pretty much did nothing.

McLaren needs to shut the fuck up and just deliver.

Fell asleep when watching infront of TV thank god didnt buy tickets at the very last moment.

Klien was dumbass and silverfish agreed with you no one has ever been this unlucky as Kimi.

And another bitchy driving from Montoya which started from 5th and 4th postion finish and the cameras didnt even bother to show him infront of TV

Boring

Me too, i fell sleep half way thru the race.

Was Kimi bumped out of the race or was it a suspension failure?

As for Montoya, nothing spectacular. All i can is that he's just maintaining his pace, nothing more than that. Not much racing to do, no overtaking, no quick laps, zero for entertainment. He's lucky he managed 4th position.

Kimi got bumped from behind by Klien. Which caused his right rear suspension to break and then he proceeded to spin and crash into the barrier. Klien promptly rolled into the pit after that with a broken left front suspension.

I remember hearing one of the commentators questioning what did Kimi did in his past life...with all those bad lucks he endured till date.

He needs to change his bedroom position, add a water fountain in front of his house, put some wind chimes, maybe a lucky charm inside the car. Whatever la.

Or something as simple as not wearing underwear or having sex during race weekends. Who knows?

HIP...HIP...HORAY.....looks like everybody are supporting FERRARI.....MCLAREN........but for me.......HIP......HIP......HORAY........both RENAULT drivers are on the PODIUM.....

kimi is very sad of the moment lar which only finish few corner already accident !!!!!!! anyway well done to sepang circuit and all the racer which finish the race n bring more exciting moment to this global f1 fans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanx a lot buddy!!!!

I believe McLaren and their sponsor are definately pissed with Montoya's performance. For 2 races, he was like an invisible ghost rolling on the track. No camera bother to capture him.

Or maybe the Montoya pissed off camera director earlier (remember the Montoya and camera crew incident?), so zero publicity for Montoya during race.

to be more precise, Renault finish 1-2 on the podium.

Sad to see Kimi and Nico end their race so early, I'm giving high expectation on both drivers for some wonderful overtaking during the race. As well as Nick, sad to see he blow his BMW near the end of the race at 5th position.

Alonso's start is just stunning.

And the incident, Alonso have extra fuel on board during qualifying session, which jeopardise his qualifying session, can i link the incident with Flavio Briatore? He do not want to hand over his WDC to McLaren next session, keeping Alonso behind Fisi might be a good idea. :)

I don't see how yesterday's race contributed a more exciting moment to the global f1 fans. I feel for the overseas fans who woke up early in the morning to witness such an uneventful and boring race.
