Hi all I'm new to car mod especially tebos, after reading all the posts, i think what xavear said is more or less represent the wastegate purpose. I have a question. I understood that turbosmart 38mm using a spring to hold the valve. The spring was made so that it only opens at a certain pressure according to its specs( pre-set at the factory).users who wants higher boost need to change to a stiffer spring. My question is on the electronically controlled wastegate. does this kind of wastegate come with pressure sensor as well? and what kind of actuator it uses to move the valve open or close. pneumatic force or magnetic or hydraulic or etc?
Basically, electronic control wastegate may not be common in our market here... I might be living under my coconut shell.
BTW, to be precise... it's the air within ur compressed air that actuated the valve. not the spring. The spring is just a mechanism to provide sufficient reaction force to hold a certain pressure P in your compressed line(from th outlet of the compressor of a turbo all the way through the intercooler and pass the BOV/BIV)... When the gas within the line reaches pressure P, it'll counter the spreing force and force the valve to open to control the ammount of exhaust to the turbine and limit the boost to P.
At normal circumstances, there are 2 ways of controlling the boost. Change to a stiffer spring like u mentioned. To increase the reaction force that requires a higher pressure to overcome the spring reaction and open the valve.
The second way is to bleed out the pressure in the pressure line. What it does is to bleed out a certain ammount of compressed gas to tell wastegate it needs more pressure to open the valve. Example,
Stock spring pressure is P. In order to achieve P1>P2 without changing spring, u need to have a boost controler(digita/manual) to bleed out the air to that there'sll be lress pressure to overcome the spring.
A digital boost control is to use the solenoid valve for bleeding
. So, when bleed out the internal lines, it has less force to overcome the spring at wastegate. So,more pressure is required to overcome the valve spring rate. So, boost increase.
can the stock exhaust headers be bolted with an external wastegate?
Yes you could, but may need to consider the workman ship.
