Hi people. 1st post, so take it easy on me

I'm studying overseas and making this enquiry on behalf of a Malaysian Friend.

Anyway, this friend of mine has a 1991 model Mercedes 190E (RWD) with engine dead and transmission due for retirement.

Current engine is a 2.0 litre Merc unit with over 300,000 miles on the clock.

Would just like to know of any suitable workshops around, or close to Shah Alam that would be able to do an SR20 DET or SR20 transplant with a suitable gearbox change and any fabrication necessary.

I'm overseas, so cannot help him out directly. He is green as far as car mods are concerned and is looking for a reliable, sensible set up for his car.

Budget is RM25k.

ANY FEEDBACK IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

i believe, buying a 190E cosworth 2.3-16v engine+manual tranny system (or even a halfcut), and doing a complete full overhaul will be a more sensible option. with RM25k, the car owner will have enough budget to "refresh" the whole car, including new bushes, suspension system, new exhaust system, new brake pads n rotors, maybe new pair of sport seats and a new coat of paint with AMG bodykits, 17inch AMG or BBS rims etc etc etc.

that way, the car will offer "as new" experience, and hopefully can serve another 300k miles...

SR20 transplant requires some extensive modifications especially on the wiring system and also engine mountings.

if the car owner wants to refresh the car, i would suggest fully overhauling another mercedes engine rather than transplanting a jap engine. 190E parts are cheap and easily available. its simplicity makes the car easily repairable by most mechanics, even when ur stranded in the middle of nowhere.

imagine using an SR20 powered 190E, and the longshaft broke somewhere in the middle of nowhere (the Grik-Kota Bharu highway gives me a good idea of that). not every mechanic knows how to rehybrid the longshaft...

well, if the owner choose to proceed to convert to SR20 engine. there is a workshop in sec 24 shah alam that can do all those extreme hybrid jobs. look for Double Z workshop. there's an E36 325i running RB25 engine that belongs to the brother of the workshop owner. they are willing to do all those work. but be warned though, the cost wont be cheap. RM25k will be finished easily...
