Hi to all and sundry:
I am wondering how Malaysian vehicles are numbered by JPJ. From my observation, it appears that vehicles in any State run from 1 to 9999. Take a Wilayah vehicle - WBE 2181; when the number reaches WBE 9999, the next number will be WBF 1.

Am I correct in this? The third letter will change after every 10,000 vehicles. Once Z is reached, then the second letter will be upgraded, say from B to C. So WBE 9999 goes on to WBF 1.

Your comments please.

Yup. Exactly as u state above. But not all alphabet use for reg no example I, O, Z. Alphabet "Z" at 1st letter is Malaysian Army Transport only.

ALL alphabet got Z cant be used on normal citizen.just for army. huhu infront or back got z cant be used

The last would be WYY 9999. Then comes WAAA 1. Expected for them (JPJ) to introduce a fourth letter

first letter is alwez for state where it is registered, 2nd & 3rd r just sequels like mentioned, I resembles #1, O resembles #0, H for taxi's & Z only for army, dunno what letter for sabah & sarawak ones, seen letter that start with Q also. watch out for red plate DC plated @ Diplomatic Car, heard can't claim ins from them.hmmm 4 letter plate nos, would sound funny though & how much will it cost heheh.

Would be interesting to build a sequence of Car Numbers, the year on the road - to have a timeline of changes. Wilayah and Selangor or Penang car numbers may change must faster than smaller states like Melaka or Negri.

Let me start.

Satria 1.5 BFL 1937 on the road 1998
Waja 1.6 MAV 3651 on the road 2002

Dont be surprised to hear that JPJ does NOT register vehicles in sequence...

Tendered numbers are being registered as and when both the numbers & owners are ready.

The remaining numbers can also be selected by paying a fee of RM210

Once selection is done and approved, you can register the vehicle immediately, therefore it jumps and dont follow sequence.

Tendered numbers of old alphabet series that are not taken up by successful bidders are also can be registered after the series had ended.

In those days where there were 2 JPJ offices in the states were given in batches of 3,000 to 5,000 numbers for each office.

So for example JNU 1000 may be registered later than JNU 5001.

Maybe my info may not be up to date but just sharing what I know.....

Tender numbers are for those special single number, paired numbers, triple and so on. Even normal numbers no need follow sequence nowadays. I book mine for RM210 also, but the number must be within that alphabet. If want next alphabet then got to wait for it to be released....
