KUALA LUMPUR: The woman who was burnt alive in her car following an accident has been identified as Florina Joseph.
City traffic police investigations chief Deputy Supt Abdullah Roning said the police, however, were conducting a DNA test to confirm this.
“We believe she was a 27-year-old college student from Sarawak,” he said. The woman was burnt beyond recognition and her personal identification documents were also destroyed in the fire on Thursday.
One of the petrol kiosk attendants said its counter hours were only until midnight.
Another kiosk said it could not confirm if the incident had taken place in its station as the night shift staff had not reported anything.
The supervisor known only as Syah said that according to company procedure, the fire extinguishers were only for station use.

KUCHING: The mother of college student Florina Joseph, 27, who was burnt alive in her car following an accident in Kuala Lumpur on June 3, is not going to let herself be overcome by grief. Instead, Sara Mateoi wants to be strong and remember the happy moments she had shared with her daughter. When met at her home in Kampung Plaman Baki in Serian, some 60km from here yesterday, Sara did not look like a mother who had just lost a daughter.
There were no tears, no look of depression nor frustration. Her voice was strong when she spoke of Florina. “I understand that many are taken aback and confused as to where I find my strength. I have my faith and I find my comfort in prayers. I have accepted that she’s in God’s care now. “Nothing in this world is permanent, is it? What saddens me is that I won’t be able to see her for the last time in the condition she is in,” she said. Florina’s body was burnt beyond recognition and her family is still waiting for her remains to be flown home.
Though Florina’s remains at Hospital Universiti Kebangssan Malaysia were identified by her sister, Sophia, the authorities are not prepared to release her body yet. Police have insisted on a DNA test to confirm her identity.
Sara said that for days before the accident, Florina made frequent phone calls home – just to ask simple questions like what the family had for dinner and their Gawai Dayak menu. “It was very unusual,” she told The Star. “Sometimes in one night, she would make 10 phone calls home. “She would call for a while, then hang up and in the next minute, call again. “This continued for weeks prior to the accident,” she added. “I guess she just wanted to hear my voice.”
Florina, the second eldest child in the family, would have graduated from her business course in July. She worked part-time at night and attended college during the day. Describing her daughter as a bubbly person, Sara said the best thing about Florina was her generosity. Florina’s death caused an outcry when attendants at a petrol kiosk along Jalan Cheras refused to lend fire extinguishers to a passer-by who wanted to put out the fire in her car.
Meanwhile, MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong said consumers should not boycott BH Petrol because of the incident as it would affect its employees who are mostly Malaysians. He said the company currently had 3,000 employees in the country and a boycott would cause many to suffer. “I personally feel that a boycott is inappropriate and unethical,” Chong told reporters at Wisma MCA yesterday.
