Hey guys, being a Honda owner and supporter for years, its ironic that I would end up here so don't crucify me. Ok here's my story:

I just learnt that I will be passed a 1973 Toyota Celica 1600ST. Yup, its the TA22. It still has its original twin carbs but the original linkage has been replaced with a cable thus the car has no response whatsoever, just slow, moderately slow, slightly fast and fast. No throttle progression.

The brakes are pretty crappy by modern standards and the suspension is "useable".

How do I deal with this car? Eventhough I have a Honda I have always liked the TA22 though I know it has a parts problem so where do you guys get your parts for old RWD Toyota's?

Can the contact point ignition be changed to an electronic unit? Any other mods any of you can think of? Just to make the car more bearable for modern driving. Stock engine, no intentions of changing it.

Thanks a million to anyone who answers!

Want me to die ah, hehe? With the current engine itself the brakes are hopeless and the suspension is barely coping. That's why I need to know what can be done...really doubting I can fit aftermarket discs and suspension to this car. I talked to a mechanic and he mentioned something about the front suspension being a special type that only can be rebuilt and not replaced.

I look at it and it has McPherson struts on the front so dunno what he talkin bout la.

yeah i dunno what your mech is talking about too. TA22 do have aftermarket parts, if not, just get a KYB stock replacement, better than normal, and since you say its for normal driving then it is more than good enough.

TA22 is a good car dude, treat it nicely, restore it to its peak condition, sure ppl drool over it..

u got lots of choice to do ur ta22.. u can use ae86 front n rear shocks + axle as well... i heard some using s13 front n rear as well..

1jz and 4age is ok in ta22, but make sure u done up ur chassis properly. wan somethg hardcore ?? try this.... http://toys.yackandandah.com/4.0LTR.htm http://www.kaichia.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif http://www.kaichia.com/forum/smileys/smiley54.gif

Thanks guys for the replies. As I mentioned earlier, don't wanna change the engine. But do need to get the car running 'safely'.

One other thing. The car has twin carbs now which were rebuilt a couple of years back but are leaking again. I have a single carb inlet manifold that will fit and was wondering if I could maybe get a Weber to fit? Will also need a new accelerator pedal cause the old one uses the linkage system and has the cable welded to it now, not very happy with this set-up actually.

vantage: send it to a proper 'body repair shop' .. get it fixed in terms of chassis corrosion welding.... then go source for suitable shockers... and last but not least, get yer brakes and engine properly serviced / tuned up.. then i think should be ok...

blackhowling, actually its the RA23 is the japanese mustang. the liftback version.

want to ask, how is the handling between celica TA22, AE86 and levin TE72? Can the TA22 match the AE86?

RA23? me feel like the RA28 is more similar to the mustang.

The body is fine. Was painted a couple of years back. Might need some welding here and there but generally its better than cars younger than it.

Does the TA22 handle better than the AE86? Really doubt it. Was reading some old reviews on the TA22, handling was a problem when it first came out. The worm steering doesn't help things either, you hardly feel anything from the road and there's freeplay which is expected with that design of steering.

vantage: u can adjust the free play of the steering.. previously owned a Mark2.. i think it's similiar in design running an 18R engine... had lots of freeplay.. the old school mech adjusted it.. quite ok edi....

Blackhowling: Yes, I know the steering can be adjusted and tightened up but it'll still have some free play. Its acceptable with the design.

Where did you get parts for your car when you had it? Any particular shops/specialist?

wat do u need bro ?? i might able to get for u...... u wan new ta's door ??u still can get the parts but all u need is $$...

Thanks but I'm still waiting to collect the car. The last I drove it was last year and then its been passed around and now its coming back to me.

I'll keep you in mind when I need parts. I know last time I had to drive to Melaka just to pick up a tail light for it. Hope its still in the condition I last saw it in.

BTW, SKY999, you've got PM

ya,replied already.....
nice to knw still got ppl like this old sch..... how much u got the taillight?? the lastime i check nearly 200 perside(NEW), jz the tail light cover at my place :emoticon_U:

mk,v8 is nice...... but i drop the project already cos need to spent alot to convert into manual. this project is expensive.....

The tailight was from a potong kereta. Can't remember exactly how much, think it was RM70-80 for it. He had some other parts as well but very expensive. Whole taillight but I had to repaint the chrome surround on my own. My car doesn't have much chrome, everything is painted black including the bumpers. So I painted the tailight chrome part black to match the other one. Turned out ok except the lenses were a bit faded but better than the old one with a hole in it.
