Alo friends,

Engine and gearbox taken out from my car. Details:

Car Model: TA22
Engine Model: 12T (Size: 1588cc; Bore & Stroke: 85.0 x 70.0mm; same as 2T, using TTC-L: Toyota Total Clean Anti-pollution System - lean combustion)
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/stepho/eng2t.htm
Gearbox: 'Suspected' T50 with bellhousing for T engines
Why T50?
1. 5 speed manual;
2. Behind T engine (previous engine in car - 2T, second engine in car - 12T);
T50 alloy 5 speed manual, usually behind T engines. Major internal revision part way through Corolla AE70. http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/stepho/engcodes.htm

Looks like no details about the gearbox can be found on the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) plate, coz TA22 VIN plate looks like this:

Bellhousings for T, A and G engines seem to be compatible. http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/stepho/engcodes.htm
The T-50 has a separate bellhousing, uses a hydraulic clutch and comprises 4 main alloy castings - bellhousing, two diagonally split front gear casings, and a tail housing. This gearbox is often referred to as the 'split case' alloy 5 speed, and weighs 29 kg.http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/8422/4age.htm

So, if it's T50, I'm letting it go at RM200 (please take the engine also, can sell off the carb and new alternator). If not, I'll sell it to the scrap iron collector.

Pic of gearbox:

Yes, that is an early T50. Identical to later model T50's (out of AE71, AE86 etc) except for different bellhousing, some smaller bearings (I know the main front bearing is smaller, unsure about the rest) and has different output shaft (20 spline I think? Vs 22 spline on the later gearboxes, or something like that). Also, shifter is in different position and shifter stick is a different shape.

Not sure if can be interchangeable with the 4A bellhousing, I tried a few times but never had any success (destroyed 4 of these gearboxes). The bellhousing does bolt up though.

However, as far as I know the gears etc in it are identical to the later model T50...

demuire da man,

I've read 'bout the 20/22 spline case (22 spline suspected 'stronger' than 20 spline) , but then what exactly is spline anyway? Would you be able to point the spline in the picture? Feel free to edit the pic.

SideWaysGrey: I had 4 of these behind my 16v 4AGE, but always seemed to break them :( Quite possibly all 4 of mine were already stuffed (2nd hand), but I have a feeling maybe to change to the 4A bellhousing is not as simple as just bolting it on? The bearing sizes are different, so maybe the 4A bellhousing doesn't put the correct amount of pressure on the bearing? Don't know... In any case, yes you can bolt it on, but I don't know how well it would work. I'm sure with some thinking you'd be able to get it to work well.

SubVerSiv: Yes, 22 spline is stronger than 20 spline (or more correctly, later model T50 is stronger), due to bigger bearings etc.

Can't see the spline from that photo. By "splines" I meant "output splines", as the "input splines" on all of the T50s are the same. If you look at the back of the gearbox, look at where the tailshaft goes in. You'll see the output shaft, and it has teeth - these teeth are called "splines".

SideWaysGrey: Should also mention in case you didn't know, if you want to bolt this to the back of an A engine you'll need the correct bellhousing, clutch slave cylinder and clutch fork. Because of different output splines you'll also need a different yoke for your tailshaft.
