Yeah I could say I am blessed with 2 kids and a job that pays well. But my knowledge on cars are pretty pathetic and I am probably the dumbest guy among the members here. Anyway despite how great Toyota wish is, sedan and suv is the main criteria. My wife wouldn't budge. And its recon some more. I guess I would have to go to the showroom and test the car myself to be sure. All my life, I have only test drive once. Tells you how pathetic my life in automotive world is.
28 still young mah! Now is the time to go and test all you want until you get one you like....:driver:

Aiyaa this is tough. Good car but hard to sell later. I don't hear about ford mondeo. Does anyone have any idea?

That is why I mention you think of second hand value or not. Mondeo could be worse....

You really need to test cars out there for yourself. Including the Teana, you might be pleasantly surprised. Here's the cars I recommend you try :

1. Toyota Camry 2.5L
2. Honda Accord
3. Nissan Teana
4. Mazda 6 2.4L
5. Mazda 3 (newest model)
6. Hyundai Sonata
7. Kia K5

I can't think of anything else that suites your budget and is new at the same time. Just find a weekend to go test drive all of these cars and have a feel of everything. If you have the time, have a feel of the Toyota Wish or the Honda Odyssey. Even though these are MPVs but they handle like cars (the Wish particularly) and are very comfortable. Whats more these cars and mpvs are pretty high up on the safety ratings.

Aiyaa this is tough. Good car but hard to sell later. I don't hear about ford mondeo. Does anyone have any idea?

The Mondeo is a boat of a car. It's huge, it's comfortable, it's everything. But after about 80k km the rear suspension bushes are prone to break down and they cost quite a bit to replace. The injectors are prone to break down too. Cost a helluva lot to replace too. Maintenance of a Ford in Malaysia is bloody expensive and that's assuming the parts are readily available. Otherwise expect a 2 week wait for parts just to service your car.

How much is that after discount and all?

What about European cars like Peugeot or citreon? Not worth looking to?

wanna consider Ultimate Driving Machine? :smokin:

You mean BMW? I just googled 'ultimate driving machine' and BMW popped out. I think its out of my budget man.

FrouFrou

Reliable, Comfortable, Reasonable Maintenance, have enough power for acceleration, Good FC, big boot, spacious.
Which Toyota Camry 2.5L suits you best. (Not too uncle too but can consider test drive Teana )

Or you may wait to test drive the new Corolla Altis as well if u were to go for a 2.0L cars. Altis, Civic, Cerato.
You may not want to choose Accord. Because somehow suddenly have news about him having a twin brother soon. Mother had an affair with a Malaysian. :hmmmm2: and twin brother's name is Accordana.

With that 180K budget u can get lots of cars. But then according to your criteria, I think camry is the one for u.
Kia Optima is nice, but I'm not sure about the maintenance for Kia/Hyundai cars.

But like they said, test drive every cars, see which u like best then u can narrow down your choices and ask more about maintenance, FC, and etcs...most important u have to be able to pick a car u like 1st.

To list it down of what I think:

Sedan:
Toyota Camry 2.5L - RM180K+
Nissan Teana - 2.5L - RM173K
Mazda 6 - 2.5L - RM195K
VW Passat 1.8L - RM170K
Mitsubishi Lancer Sportsback 2.4L (No idea about this car but is around your price range) - RM136K

Comparing the Sedans, for me I would choose Mazda 6...the design is damn nice among the rest. 2nd choice would be Camry.
Mazda 6 looks expensive to me if compare to Camry and Teana, also Passat.

SUV: (All these you need to test drive, no idea about this cars)
Mazda CX-5 2.0L - RM154K
VW Cross Touran 1.4L - RM169K
Mitsubishi ASX 2.0L - RM144K

Izso:

Teana with a V6, maintenance won't be more costly?

I Agree wish is very very comfortable...is damn spacious too. The new design is really nice and looks bigger than the older models.
Worth Considering.

Peugeots are known to be very homely in the workshop. Friends 208 was in the workshop so often it wasn't funny. Warranty wasn't honored in a few cases because they blamed her for going outside to some other workshop - which she didn't. The dispute case went on forever and then there's the 1 month wait for parts. In the end the car was sold off at a loss because she couldn't stand the car breaking down so often and the rubbish service. Then there's another story about another friends 308 with similar negative feedback. I've yet to hear about 408s and 508s with the same complaints but none of my friends were dumb enough to want to buy these models after they heard about our common friends with their earlier complaints. Cousin also owns the sedan 208. Maintenance costs are comparable with his previous Kia Sephia - meaning sky high costs. Wouldn't recommend it unless you stayed in Europe. Peugeots are cheaper to maintain there because they are that much nearer to France.

Citroens are a hit and miss. Friends Picasso costed her RM2000 odd per service every 6 months but the car was a fabulous ride and extremely comfortable. If you can live with the super high cost of maintaining one then it's a great car to drive apparently.

Mind you - all these quotes that I'm giving you are from the manufacturers service centers themselves. You might be able to find outside mechanics that can service your car for much less but since you said you're an absolute newbie, you're better off getting the warranty from the manufacturer themselves (in terms of service and all).

BMWs aren't expensive to own apparently. The new lowest model 3-series is within your budget. But for the same kind of money you can get a better spec car from the Japanese manufacturers which offer the same if not better comfort compared to the 3-series. Great cars though.

The Mazzer6 2.5 where got so cheap? I thought it was 200k+ The 2.0 is the 173k right?

Teana being a Nissan, means it'll be a looooong while before maintenance will be an issue. These V6s are bulletproof man. Besides, if you're gonna buy such a luxury car you're gonna be expected to pay a bit more. But having said that it's still cheaper than maintaining a Mondeo, VW or a Beemer

Sad to say French cars are bad. But their design is soooo good!

Friend's 308 Turbo engine error light always up, and transmission already changed twice. Luckily under warranty.

The first time he changed transmission might be the fact that he boosted to Stage 1, but the second time, he already downgraded it.

He's going UK next year, so guess what he is driving next month?

His mum bough the new Vios.

Oh yeah, and thanks for asking a constructive question unlike before the others hahaha

Sorry my bad, edited post

Ya VW is not cheap to maintain...contis..

but the Mazda MPS specs is really mouth watering...RM181K

The power is as good as Ford Focus S+...guess better of getting Mazda MPS...cheaper to maintain JDMs.

Mazda 6 2.5l on the road price list after roadtax, insurance etc2 is about 189k assuming your insurance with zero NCD. If got 50% NCD, get rid off the 19' rims/tires, and maybe get some discounts, maybe can get around 185k?

---------- Post added at 11:13 AM ---------- 6 hour anti-bump limit - Previous post was at 11:10 AM ----------

The 2.0 Mazda 6 isn't underpowered. Just don't expect blistering performance for a car that price. You're better off with the 2.0 Mazda 3.

Wow.. 28 years old and have that kind of budget with 2 young kids? You're lucky mate!

Personally, I think you should spend it on a nice (no more than) 3 years recon 2.0 Wish from a reputable seller like Top Mark for about RM130k, then spend about RM5k on security and making the car un-steal-able, and spend another 3k in getting proper child seats. Comfort, pretty modern looks, pretty decent fuel consumption and a bullet proof engine and because it's a Toyota, relatively low maintenance.

Want blistering performance have to at least go with something like Evo or WRX STI, all >rm200k new.

If recon car, I'd rather get Mark X.

Ok so based on earlier posts, i have concluded that continental cars are a big no-no and my best bet would be all those japs cars. That surely narrowed my choice down, which is great so i dont really have to test drive so many cars. I just read in the papers that mazda is having a roadshow at one u. Best to check it out. I saw free car insurance and road tax and can even get swiss watch worth 2500 if book mazda 6 there. Top of my head now is mazda 6. Disappointed though for limited accessories for 2.0 version. The price for 2.5 is a bit steep if you ask me but if the maintenance is comparable with honda or toyota, it is worth buying. What do you guys think?

I dont think my wife would approve me buying performance car. Chick magnet car is a big no-no for me. *Sigh* though it would be nice to have one

Yes 1U have Mazda roadshow and featuring their New MPV as well...
Mazda Biantai...I mean Mazda Biante.

MazdaBianteGRANZ2012-686x387.jpg

2.0L MPV. RM149K.

Bring your wife along. Family car, MPV would be nice but then Stylo would be Mazda 6. Maybe your wife may change her mind about MPVs.

If only extra 16K if can afford, by all means get the Mazda 6 bro. I think is worth it. If not is either the Teana 2.5L or the Camry 2.5L

Eh....please...not the new Wish...the gearbox is very prone to problems and what's more it's from grey importers...no warranty after short period of time....you want to push ppl go die??
Didn't you notice why on the road not much new Wish kah...:stupid:

Why big CC will be more expensive when come to maintenance? I think should be roadtax more expensive...maintenance cost depends on part availability, ease of sourcing them and not because of CC.....No? My Lexus CT200h 1.8 maintenance is more expensive then my 2.4 Mitsubishi Grandis given both CBU...

My friend's 308T also claimed quite a few things. Not the problems with claims but like bro. Izso mentioned it goes to the workshop more then it being used....:banghead:

Because my uncle has one and there is no problem after 6 months now. Touchwood.
Hope gearbox wont have problems.

TR,
heard only the 2.0 wish had gbox problems (with wheel arches), the 1.8 seems ok no complaints so far.

FrouFrou,
i would have gotten the mazda 6 2.0, but since its still new therefore not much discounts. that car was top of my list.
