Which intercooler...

generally a bigger intercooler means more volume to fill up and thus more laggy as mentioned above but also depends on which big intercooler you're looking at. not all intercoolers are made the same, the frc items in particular, have very few additional internal fins within the tubes so its fin surface area to conduct heat from the compressed air inside is much less compared to good japanese intercoolers. if you get a large lorry intercooler then the lag will be very bad due to the compound effect of a huge volume to fill and low flow efficiencies. the pipings(length and diameter) also has a role to pllay as mentioned above. generally speaking, get a moderately sized intercooler and make sure it is front mount for maximum cooling. also pay as expensive an intercooler as you can afford which has very low pressure drop. so if you're thinking of replacing your standard gsr item with an frc supra sized ic, i would strongly discourage. but going from a gsr to say a good hks or even apexi evo sized ic, you will lose some response, but ultimately when you go for higher boost over sustained WOT conditions, you will start seeing gains.

I thought that only applies to turbines ie the bigger it is the longer it takes to spool?

but the idea of bigger intercooler and longer time for air to to through might be true..then again smaller intercoolers usually means hotter air .. anymore sifus who can answer this more clearly?
the purpose of the manufacturer design a small ic cause its boosting low and it does not produce much heat , with the small ic its enough to cool down the air without any down sides . some turbocharge engine does not run on ic , its runs direct cause not much heat is been produce and if they install an ic on it , it would not be efficient anymore .

borrow your post for a while hehehe
