guys,

I have a fren who wanted to sell some old jap rims. its a 3-piece type rims with 8 nuts around the rim that hold the pieces of the rims together. The problem is that almost all nuts are quite rusty and I don't know if the rims are safe to be used. Can the nuts and bolts be replaced? is there any tyre shop that can do the replacement?

i am tempted buying the rims as they are quite cheap compared to shops out there.

the pic below is just example of the nuts @ the rims.

Blacksamurai,

I pinjam the rim from my fren and took it to the tyre shop. I asked for advice if the nuts/bolts can be changed or not. The shop owner said that the bolts and nuts can be changed. but there are risk to it.

1) the nuts and bolts may be damaged during the process of loosing them. Rust, dirt have lodge in the opening/thread. So there are no garentee there are not damaged along the process of changing.

2) eplacing the ori nuts and bolts, there is risk of air leakage when tyre is installed. To fix leakage, welding on the rim may be a remedy. This would make the rim heavier and out of balance....Other sealant is not recomecded as they are not durable enuf.

3) repacing ori nut/bolts with new ordinary bolts and nuts from local supply store is not strong nuf for the rims. The were not certified by engineers (when the rim was checked at the rim manufacturer then). there is a risk when driving at high speed or going thru potholes...

I'm a bit hesitant now after hearing all the advice from him...
