New system for vehicle ownership
PUTRAJAYA: A more secure system for vehicle ownership claims is being implemented with a link-up system between the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Financial Information System (FIS).
The system, which is expected to be fully operational within six months, will wipe out fraud in vehicle ownership claims.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the system would also include the sharing of information on vehicles whose ownership claims by finance companies had been cancelled.
The FIS, which is a joint venture concern between the Association of Financial Companies and the Association of Hire Purchase Companies, will provide for the sharing of data on vehicles kept by JPJ.
Chan said that once the system was implemented, the registration of vehicles would be done electronically and transactions for cancellations or claims of vehicle ownership could be conducted at any JPJ offices nationwide.
The current system required motorists to go to the same JPJ office where their vehicles were registered to claim ownership, he said yesterday.
“It is also troublesome and vulnerable to forgery. Through the link-up system, the quality, integrity and security of data on vehicles are assured, thus protecting the hire-purchase industry in the country,” he said.
Under the system, he said, all companies involved in providing hire-purchase service for vehicles would be required to sign up as FIS members.
The public, he said, could also access information on vehicles by doing an official search at the JPJ website at RM20 per search.
