Good questions, why lea? My theory:
Manual tranny is connected to the engine directly with the clutch plate, so it can also be improvised as a manual starter. Like the crank starter in most pre-WW2 car, those cranker in front of the engine outside the car. You crank, engine move, dynamo make electricity, then engine spark, VWRRROOOMM.
Automatic tranny is shift by using hydraulic in the gearbox, so basically when you push to a petrol station far far away (30km max) or attempt to push-start your car (not gonna work), it only running the hydraulic system, and the car won't let you start at "D" position, "N" position acts like the free gear in manual, so you're actually damaging your gearbox little by little. That's why car towing is best when using flat bed tow truck (ie the car's all 4 wheels is on the truck, not rolling on the ground) or using the "free" wheel (ie wheels are not driven by the engine). Conclusion, better call in a tow truck rather push-start it. That's why an automatic tranny can be troublesome in some cases, and expensive to maintain.
