The S2000 only has two cam lobes.
Whereas a B series engine has three. Before VTEC the small cams have two different profiles, one valve extends further down than the other. Which is to help save fuel. Once VTEC comes on the big cam comes into play pushing both valves further down at the same level, instead of having both valves operate at different levels - this causes the so-called VTEC kick.
An S2000 engine was made to be a killer engine with hardly any thoughts put into fuel saving. So even when VTEC is off the valves operate at the same level. And of course, the small cam has a 256 duration or something, which causes a smoother transition to the VTEC cam which is probably a 290 duration or something.
