Hey guys, im new to the forum, but it seems like theres alot of knowledge here so yous might be able to help me out. I just recently picked up a Daihatsu Handivan, but this is only its Australian name, in England its known as a Domino, and apparently everywhere else its known as a Cuore. Its 2-door, 2 seater, with a big empty area going all the way back to the hatch. Its a 1984 model.

Basically, im making my own bodykit for it, welding up all the rust, spraying it myself, and dropping in a new engine. It weighs next to nothing, with 4 of us being able to lift the entire car. Its apparently 660cc, and 40bhp, so i figure if i can get 100hp it will be very quick.

What i need to know is, what engines will fit in without a massive amount of work? will a charade engine fit, whether it be the 1.0L or the 1.3L. Would a charade turbo 1.0L fit? i also intend on whacking on a SC-12 Toyota Supercharger, or a SC-14 off a 4AGZE. I know going Turbo + S/C is complicated, but thats the plan, but all i need for now is to get a new engine and gearbox in there and i'll worry about that later. So basically, what engines will fit? I'd prefer not to modify engine mounts, but am willing to, but the main thing is that i'd preferably not move the firewall back.

Thanks guys, hope to hear a response soon.

Hi codo and welcome to the forum,

I did an image search on Google and found this:

I guess this is the car you're talking about. It was never sold here but based on its looks, I do not see problems fitting in a Charade or Mira engine. If you're looking for additional power, then I would say consider the turbocharged Mira engines. These come in 660cc also and shouldn't be a problem fitting in. I'm not sure of the mountings though. But since Daihatsu has always made their engines similar, you might discover mountings are exactly the same.

Other possibilities are the CB23 Charade engine (1000cc 3cyl carb) or the HC-E from the G102 (1300cc 4 cyl EFI). These will require some mounting mods.

Other engines such as the ones you mentioned will require major mods to the mountings and also the possibility of the chassis not being able to withstand the extra power. Another problem would be the driveshafts where you will most probably need to custom-make some since the lengths will be different. Hope this helps.

Thats the one mate. Basically we've worked out the chassis wont withstand the power we're going to be putting through it, because even if we only run lets say a turbo'd engine + nitrous its still going to be 3x as much power, so we're taking that into account, and 50kg of re-inforcements, while it will kill me to do (i hate making a car slower) seems like a worthwhile investment.

How powerful are the Mira engines? basically we only want to do a bit of head work, forgies, and camshafts, so would it really be that powerful? We want 100hp at the treads without nitrous, thats our goal. Obviously a charade engine would make this alot easier, but as you said, there will be some mounting issues. As for space though, would you have any idea on the dimensions of a charade 1.0L? surely someone will know.

we've basically removed everything from the engine bay, so its time to try track down an engine, anyone know a good place for daihatsu motors/gearboxes in NSW australia?
