PUTRAJAYA: Only one-third of students used English when answering exam questions for Mathematics and Science in this year’s PMR despite having learnt the subjects in the language for three years.

Most of the candidates still preferred to answer in either Bahasa Malaysia or a mixture of both languages, Education Director-General Datuk Dr Ahamad Sipon told a press conference to announce this year's PMR results.

.

An examiner for Mathematics and Science said she was surprised by the number of students who preferred to use Bahasa Malaysia.
.
.

Dr Ahamad added that he was “extremely satisfied” with this year’s results.

At the press conference, Malaysian Examinations Syndicate director Dr Salleh Hassan refuted allegations that this year’s PMR was easy.

“To validate the results for English, Science and Mathematics this year, we invited external assessors from Cambridge International Examinations and Australia’s Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority.

“We have a very reliable system that has been acknowledged internationally,” he added.

compare 2005's PMR paper
and 1998's
u will see huge difference in difficulty, no shit

here comes Bahasa Shopping Kompleks...

but sometimes, some know what the answer to a question bullseye but quite weak to answer back in proper sentence of a certain language.

but then again, those kids should properly learn both languages well, and able them to answer either only in English or Bahasa Melayu.

question ...
How they derive the 1/3 statistic?
Based upon the quota defined by Msia government where 60% is bumi and 40 is non bumi ..
thats why only 1/3 using english? hehe!

Saya punya English is not very fluent. I prefer to menggunakan Bahasa Melayu untuk answer saya punya question. Besides, Bahasa Melayu ialah I punya national language. Government kita tidak sepatutnya change subjects using Bahasa Melayu menjadi English sebab I can't understand Jack. Ibu bapa saya should complaint and make a big hu ha supaya government tidak menggunakan English.

Doesn't sound right, does it? Students prefer to answer in a mixture of 2 languages? That's absolutely absurd. It will sound exactly like the extract I have just written above. I still say, use English. They may not know the benefits now, but they will really appreciate the government for doing so when they move on to their tertiary education.

Parents should not discourage their children from learning English by complaining. Are we gonna complaint when our children go to college? Are we gonna ask the colleges and universities to use BM in their syllabus? NO!! So why the fuss now?

As much as I support patriotism and the use of our very own national language, education is just not the way to do it. I feel the government is doing the right thing by changing all subjects to English and at the same time ensure the importance of the Bahasa Melayu subject.

I just don't see the point in fussing over the use of English and making it a whole colossal issue when it is the lingua franca of almost the whole world. It's a defacto standard for most people. When you meet up with people, you just naturally assume they speak English, well at least when you go overseas. Anyway, just my two cents.

well, mainly the reason i see why our government push the students is to make them easier to go study oversea. needless to say that almost all students who goes oversea is supposed to have good scores in english since schooldays. so i dont think we need to stress in english so much. keep the bahasa as number one. in fact we can learn another language which is more beneficial... for me its the japanese language. imagine how modern malaysia would be if most of our students is sent there instead of western?

i'll be glad if im in their shoes. learn in english during school is such an advantage for life after school !

Right man! I second that. I wish I could when I was in secondary school but unfortunately, I can't, and now they're complaining. SIGH.
