Here is an power steering gears diagram for the A32 Nissan Cefiro/Maxima in explosive view. Hope this can help you in the future to identify the parts fault.

You have:

- Whole steering rack
- Tie Rods
- Tie Rods End

If it is leaking oil, please check:

1) All parts with the label * : these are the seals. Nissan sells them as a complete seals kit for the steering rack.

2) 49541, 49542 at the joint, I would assume the seals are an O-ring rubber items, please do check them as well.

If you steering is vibrating or knocking sounds when driving over bumps and humps, please check:

1) 49520K : This is the tie rod end, and is the common failure that causes the vibrations and knocking sounds you get. Nissan sell them as a complete tie rod end kit which comes with the tie rod arm, the lock nut, the balljoints, and the pin.

2) 49521K : This is the inner tie rods, you can't see them as they are in the housing and it is really hard to 'suspect' that they are failing. Which is why most workshops would recommend replacing the whole steering rack itself, because the work involved in getting the rods is not far off from removing the whole rack itself, so...

3) Replace the whole rack.

Please feel free to ask any questions. I am still learning as well.

Regards
Ed

you use the FAST to get the diagram out?

Steering rack normally not much of issue, and problem just replace the entire rack :D

FAST? what is that? I got the diagram from Nissan Australia. They have become my friends now as I visit their place so often to get diagrams, pictures, price quotations but I purchase the parts from outside Nissan lol.

Yea, there is not many Maximas for wrecked here and no parts importer import parts for Cefiro either. They are sooo unpopular here.

Nissan FAST. its the program allow you to search for car parts and parts number.

oh lol yeah, I always ask them to do it and print it out for me. LOL, the best program for Nissan cars ever.
