If a MRS is to be fitted with 2ZZGE engine from a celica gts.. what gearbox should the mrs use? standard 1ZZFE gearbox or the 2ZZGE gearbox?
oh, im not mistaken, the 2ZZGE gearbox is FWD right?

sorry, another stupid question

no...its not stupid question......
is just that not so many people have the opportunity to play MRS n 2zzge....but i think its not impossible....
g/luck:)

I not an MR-S expert... but if I am not mistaken, even if the arrangement is Midship, MR-2 & MR-S is still using FF Tranny, because I have seen a known FF GB like C56 being fitted in one.

My 2 cents

You need both if you are pre 2003 (items of here and there) .

2003 onwards MRS has 6 speed so it non issue. BUT you may run on 5 speed too. The 6th gear useful only on highway.

Clucth will be 1ZZFE or 2ZZGE but flywheel 2ZZGE.

looking for 2ZZGE donor.

BTW why do you ask?

thanks for the input guys.

@GT20v : u drving mrs or celica??

@EFN : i once came up with a theory once, or rather a hypothesis, that the MR2 and MRS is using FF gearbox too... but so far i havent proven it yet. but reading ur post might be the answer. thanks

koolspyda : thanks for u answer. why do i ask? hahaha, im a fan of MRS and toyota cars. recently i read some articles on toyota engines and read bout the 1ZZ and 2ZZ, and it said 1ZZ cant be revved high, then i started thinking of ways to improve it. then i came to one paragraph of the article tht suggests hard core enthusiasts to change the engine to 2ZZGE. i re-watched best motoring video forgot what episode and confirmed that the mrs was also using 2ZZGE, so after that, i started to get curious on waht gearbox to use if the 2ZZGE is fitted in there. if u guys had read my question on EJ-DE+L9, u'd know im still too young to think bout this... but in everyone, there is curiousity right?

once again thanks. still lookinh forward to see more answers here.

issit 2003 onwards MRS comes with 6 speed manual?? or is 6 speed SMT??
i onli know pre 2003 comes with 5 speed manual and 6 speed SMT....

got a stupid question here...
say, if a MRS is turbocharged, where should the intercooler be placed? will the rear bumper be ok? or front mount or inside the front hood? will it be okay if the intercooler is placed at the front, and wouldnt the piping be too long?

below is a pic from a MRS,

http://img111.exs.cx/img111/2330/JGTCmrs.jpg

is that an intercooler?

im driving none that u mention...except corolla of coz.uncle ride..hehehhe

Best Motoring MRS = Techno spirt Car runs on 2ZZGE. Converted from 5 to 6 speed (manual). Aluminium block with MMC liners (2ZZGE). 1ZZFE comes with iron liners.

1ZZFE engine is 10.5:1 compresion and rpm HP tops at around 6400rpm.

2ZZGE is capable to hit 7600(Stock ECU) i think BUT with PFC can run to 9K.
Lift is at 6400K and climbs to a intoxicating wail !! much like VTEC.

Japan GT300 MRS = Runs on 3SGTE engine (from the previous MR2 car ~Mkii) Cast iron block. Stronger engine to withstand the high boost from large turbines!!

3SGTE pros = proven engine . able to tune to 700HP!!
cons = heavier than the other 2 engines above.

2ZZGE pro = light in weight vs 3SGTE. Good spread of torque BUT the hike in HP when changeover (Lift) is something conservative manucfacturer like toyota don't want to unleash to public (as MRS is rear engine and the spike in HP may throw the handling = this is something that is speculated that toyota is afraid to get sued) While enthsusiast may love it BUT the mass majority of MRS buyers are not petrol head kakis. (unlike elise where majority buyers are semi hardcore track drivers)

1ZZFE = also light in weight Vs 3S and 2ZZGE. excellent torque spread and Fun to drive. THere are guys who turboed the MRS (0.5 bar lightweight turbines will bring to 190HP and other bolt ons has them has pushing it to 300HP. However anything beyond that waiting for it to blow dead.

It is speculated that Toyota may finally throw in a larger HP engine to the MRS judging by the spy photos (caught in Germany) BUT as always the final decision lies with the corporate HQ in Japan if they wanna built it. FYI the celica and the MRS (spyder ) officially ends in 2005 for US market. Toyota will not continue them.

BTW the placement shown is a works car and without retricters on the GT300 car could easily run 600-700HP.

Most MRS bolt on kits has their intercooler running on rear and the TOMs turbo has top mounted intercooler (altough all of them may not be completely ideal depending on application)

wow vewry nice koolspyda... thanks thanks :D
i read once that MRSs cant support heavy mods and huge boost levels. cant rev hjigh enough, yea but its true, not suitable for petrol heads.

oh erm waht do u mean by this? i dont get it..

oh yea, would rear mount intercooler affect the engine performance compared to frount mount? i know intercoolers need air, but will there be any difference to the amount of air it will receive when placed in front and at the back? since the car is virtually always moving forward, so, being placed in front would be better right?

koolspyda
Say... what happened to Spyderchat, haven't been able to get it for quite some time.

back to normal now.

yeah ...
how about 3sgte on MRS ?

who done it in My b4 ? need to remove the soft roof away as may need to cut off the firewall....??

there is one 3SGTE spyder in malaysia but it has gone 5 or more "retransplant". either there isnt good expertise locally in the first place or the owner was taken for a ride.

there are already views (pro & cons) on this swap earlier in zth toyota thread ~ "Toyota MRS / MR2 spyder"

Hahaha...
:P

of course to confirm. 2ZZGE swap in MRS can do with 1ZZ gearbox, or 2ZZ gearbox. But the 2ZZ selector shaft (the long stick from the gearbox to the gear knob) needs to be machined slightly to fit.

1ZZ you stlll have 5 speed. easy bolt in. & 2ZZ , yup shaft needs to be machined. no PRC can service that shaft
