It depends on which shims u wanna put. The one mentioned by tonytony or me.

If as tonytony mentioned, it's bigger than that. U locate it at the oil pump pressure release valve's spring.

For my case, it's about the size of a 5cents. I put 3, some put 2. Normally, put 1 doesn't make much difference.

actually the shim size on the oil pump relief valve is about the 5 cents size (or smaller dependent on the spring diameter). in any case, its not big

i found out last week, another method of getting rid of the the unwanted clacking noise. i met a guy whose engine was so quiet dat we tot it was switched off, lol

he told me, all we need to is take all the lifters out, and clean it wit petrol. clean it on the inside, until all the dark carbon inside them is flushed out. make sure dat the lifters can be pressed fully, if not den keep on cleaning them. he told dat he diy-ed dis, and his engine has been purring since den

bro....i heard of the same thing but dont know where or who can do it....anybody here got a step by step guide on this....do we need any special tools to remove the lifters...also when we remove the cams do we need to retorque them when we re-fit them? Thanks....

at last, found dis thread, lol

so, around dis week, god willing, i'll conduct the process to get rid of dat tick-tacking noise in my engine. the methods iam planning to use is both suggested by members in here and the cleaning of the lifters themselves. i'll post the result here, if i remember ler. or else, members may pm me for the result

bro.. can recommend anywhere to do this? or can we diy at my friends workshop? i belanja u nanti :proud:

some of my friends already did this a while ago, but i didn't managed to do it.

done, but not satisfactory. the sound decreased, but not as good as i expected. i was expecting the noise reduction wud be 100% because we used a thick washer jugek.

so, what we did was, we put a shim/washer which is around 2~3mm wide and plugged it in. i was worried if the pressure is just too much for the system? but by the sound of it, i dont think we exceeded the oil pressure the lube system cud handle. gonna do these things afterwards; a)change the washer thickness b)clean up the lifters

any comments are much appreciated

where did you add the shim to? the oil pump relief valve or at the lifters? if at the oil pump relief valve, how thick did you add?

from my experience with adding washers on the oil pump relief valve, the improvement wasn't immediate. give it 1 week.

ok lorr... sometimes only tik tik tik...

but yesterday got an offer by my foremen, which he has a spare putra complete head urgently to sell .. so, i bought the cams+lifter and install it to my car... wallaaa... slience silence

How much did he offered u?? Mind sharing???

tony, it needed time indeed. around a week after installation, it quitened down as if it is a new engine, the ticking sound just surface sekali sekala, but most of the time its quiet. i think dis is due to the used oil use, and the lifters are still clot wit hard carbon in it. iam still giving it time, watching it closely. so far, it really does what u told us, but not 100%. with ur statement about "giving it time", iam gonna give it a lil more time before going for the 2nd option; take out the lifters and clean them.

great news bro!! hope ur ticking noise continue to improve. pls do share the outcome from time to time :itsme:

god willing tony, iam still monitoring it, showing good result thus far ni.. i think the ticking is still there sumtimes because, i reused the oil ler.. hehe, and the shim is around 2mm in thickness, is dat too much ke tony?

bro, if as per mine, it gets better with everyday driving. i've done mine for 1 year++ dy. its not the condition of the oil, my semi-syn i've already used up to 12000km as of now, no ticking (only 1 second during cold start). my guess is, over time, as ur oil pump relief valve gets used to the 're-stated' tension rate, then 'OEM' spec operation will resume. good indicator if what you've done is working is to let the engine idle for as long as you can. if ticking don't come on after 10 mins idle, ur problem have been solved.

ya, god willing, it'll get ALOT better

btw, 2mm shim looks ok to me. best to consult ur mechanic. for me, i inserted 2 standard type washers. don't know what were the thickness, but its those standard type.
