Hello forumers, i have these questions:

1. why do we use coolant + water for the radiator?
2. can i use only coolant, no water?
3. will my cooling system bacomes better n my engine temperature go down more if i use 100% coolant?
4. is it true if we use 100% coolant the radiator tends to crack at the joints n become weaker and prone to clogging? (heard this from few reputable pomen......)

Appreciate all ur feedbacks.:adore:

1. why do we use coolant + water for the radiator?
**for better cooling efficientcy, but in cold countries it also works as antifreeze during winter
2. can i use only coolant, no water?
**can, use distilled water aka mineral water.
3. will my cooling system bacomes better n my engine temperature go down more if i use 100% coolant?
**better use 50/50.
4. is it true if we use 100% coolant the radiator tends to crack at the joints n become weaker and prone to clogging? (heard this from few reputable pomen......)
**not sure, but his theory could be right.

thanks danz...... more feedbacks appreciated.....:burnout:

Hi,

Some corrections in the use of regular tap-water, DI (deionized) water and distilled water. My apologies to DanzEterna, as distilled water is not exactly mineral water. In fact mineral water is more closer related to tap-water. Read up on this, I think it's simple to understand:

http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem03/chem03923.htm

As for how and why you should mix, read up on this article:

Radiator and Coolant (Antifreeze) Service Article

Hope it helps, and no intended offence caused. As I always tell any of my juniors, "Just Google It".

Cheers.

learning is curvy........ thanks bro...... im learning too.........

with coolant, its easily for u to spot when there is a leakage in cooling system.

it serves as cooling, lubricant to cooling system too(eg.water pump)

with and without coolant, there is different wit water temp.

thanks bro kenny, appreciate u sharing:listen:

i have read in a lot of articles saying that nothing beats pure water in heat transfer, coolant is mainly used as lubrication (the texture is bit oily) and for neutralizing acid, in cold countries, it serves as an antifreeze. the oily texture makes coolant inferior to water in transferring heat

if this is true then 100% coolant wont cool the engine as good as 100% water. also, since we dont have freezing problem, i have read 70-30 or 80-20 ratio for best cooling while still having proper lubrication and acid resistancy in hot climate

correct me if im wrong coz im using 80-20 for my car now :D

Aisay.. I think this has been discussed so many times in several places. Uponriversky's thread too.

Hello forumers, i have these questions:

1. why do we use coolant + water for the radiator?

Because we don't use oil. LOL! Like what uponriversky said - water is a pretty good conductor that doesn't explode in your face at certain temperatures.

2. can i use only coolant, no water?

Caaaaan. It's pointless though. Pure coolant is acidic and it'll eat through the metal like it was biscuits.

Those "full coolants" you buy out there aren't really 'pure' coolant, they are premixed. Usually 50-50 but really depends on the purpose of the coolant, cooler countries the premix normally would be higher on the coolant less on the water.

3. will my cooling system bacomes better n my engine temperature go down more if i use 100% coolant?

Usually premixed coolants are good but not that good. It'll keep it at optimum temperature but not make it cooler. You want cooler install a bigger more efficient radiator and change to a lower temperature thermostat.

4. is it true if we use 100% coolant the radiator tends to crack at the joints n become weaker and prone to clogging? (heard this from few reputable pomen......)

Yes.. read my reply in #2. You gotta understand what ethylene glycol coolants do and why they do what they do before you experiement with these things. Foremans in M'sia are sadly apprentices to bawah pokok foremans and sometimes their knowledge is dangerously inaccurate. Like how some foremans tell you to throw away the thermostat - that's probably not going to be the end of the world but your engine will never warm up to optimum temperature in time (or at all) and you'll have more wear and tear in your engine internals. That's a bad thing.

So anyway - good thing to ask in forums for clearer knowledge, but also good to check it up on Google for opinions from countries where they take engineering seriously - like in the US for example. Even reboring a cylinder wall they have honing plates. How many engineering shops in KL do that?

I'm using Denso coolant mix with battery water 50/50. From the very first day i have my car till now (7 years). No moss etc in the reservoir. Never flush the radiator till now too. Temp maintain even 400km drive (kl jb). The logic is distilled water contains almost nothing for anything to grow in it, especially moss :proud:

Er.. no moss la.

Distilled water doesn't contain minerals and whatever like mineral water. When heated to xxx degrees, you might get mineral deposits that'll eventually clog up your radiator. But if you flush very regularly this shouldn't be a problem. It's only for lazy buggers like you and me that using distilled water make sense.

dumb question, how do we get distilled water off the shelf? :D

what you mean off the shelf..they come in bottles.. just buy from supermarket.. brand doesn't matter just get the cheapest one.. its just pure h2o with absolutely nothing inside.. no minerals, no sodium, nothing.

i still prefer distilled water rather than any coolant .
no mineral = no clogging, sludge building in the radiator.

and also, do mind the matter than distilled water has the best flow rate as compared to the coolant .
these coolants are considered heavy liquid hence, hogging your pump system .
but then again, the pump is strong enough to do the job .

but i prefer distilled because its still the best liquid available for cooling system i believe .

@upontheriversky

u can get from 7-11 or any petrol station at arnd RM7 for 5 liters .

but with coolant, ur water temp is better. oem manufacturer cars all wit coolant, so i assumed there is a reason :)

its up to the individual preference .
possibly yes, since it comes standard with the coolant, probably the best idea .
but to me, i still prefer better flow rate and best dissipation rate.

well at least, that's what i believe in .
hehe

Erm.. Buy from pasar borong RM5 per 5L bigass bottle. I have 3 at home for my flushing purposes. Got sell one laaa.. just look for 'distilled water'

dude, u re also using 100% distilled water w/o coolant? how often do u flush ur radiator?:smokin:
