Hi guys,

I am looking for an opinions and suggestions on Emanage or Unichip for Y2000 MRS. Where is the best place to buy , install and tune.
What about Apexi Neo, is it waste of time and money or all these upgrades waste of time and money also and get the TRD stuff instead.

Thank you for your time and answer.

P.s Koolspyder can you pm your hp again please, i have misplace your number.
thank you for your past help.
Maz

have been using unichip for a while.... pretty satisfied.. but not for MR-S though.. Never had any experience with E-manage.. but i do believe it's pretty much the same... maybe Unichip wiring is alittle lesser.. but well that's the installer's problem anyway.. :)

Can hook you up with a good unichip tuner (been to Unichip South AFrica for training) if you're interested.. He's not local.. but he's here almost every weekend.. pm me if you're interested...

maz, the mod that you are looking for your ride is to know whats your desire out take.

meaning performance vs fuel economy...etc

i wont go into Apexi Neo, Emanage or Unichip as eventually if you seek more "fun" for the car, then i would sugggest the line of mods.

>suspention + anti roll + braces will notch it higher up & thus gives you the road confidence.
> if you want to remain NA, a aftermarket manifold will free the restricted horses.

MR-S for what is reknowned for is it unique handling & i would normally suggest owners to extract more by improving it to "closer to" "elise-like". now i know many lotus fans will "ketuk" me for even mentioning the MRS in same breath as elise but granted, if you put the elise is one end of the spectrum (more track like) on 9pts on handling, the stock MRS is 6pts. Improve on "its" (MRS) core assets & trust me you will not regret.

with the above swaps, in my autocross experience (& with good selection of tires) you "could keep" be within even turbo class timings. but of course the driver must have the discipline.

however those mods to me is more bang-for-buck than well say piggy backs. (not taking anything away from piggy backs as they will do just find for road cars). Is just that because the MRS is made as such; even minor set up changes will have dramatic improvement on "road-feel".

TRD are pricer but there are alternatives. sometimes some owners prefer convenience (as TRD is represented here to say CUSCO) etc.

but if your idea of a more bling outlook then performance ie appearence then by all means spend on car outlook. I know some owners feel it a waste of money to mod on performance. like i said it a matter of out take.

maz, ive pm'ed my mobile.

while on the subject of modding....

- need some recommendations as to where to send for engine balancing/blueprinting......can consider to sneak-in stroker kit (if there is any) while i'm at it.....
- sway bar...
- had a look at http://www.autofoam.com.my/ .... desmond gave me a call ~8.30am quoting rm880. damn, that expensive for cans of 'buih'? i argued that the mr-s is only a 2 door car...the website did mention that foaming cost will depend on car size...examples in the articles/gallery stated rm880:perdana, 660:kenari, therefore by simple logic: small car->2 doors->less cans->mr-s cheaper....on that note, he wanted to give me the 'racing' type one, 'lagi keras'. huh? are they not all the same? i just smiled listening to his capacity to goreng, c'mon-lah i was not born yesterday dude....

tx koolspyda for the list....not entirely sure how the 'aluminium under panel' thingy can contribute to the handling/performance of the spyder.... or is it simply for cosmetics reasons?

about the foam thingy; i post some discussions on other forums; you decide (not shooting it down BUT its your choice.)

Hi Guys,
Has anyone investigated/tried/succeeded in utilizing injected structural foam to increase the rigidity of the Spyder's chassis rails, sills, A-pillars, etc?

Most manufacturers seem to be using this material in some manner or another these days and the engineering specs I've read indicate it might be worthwhile as an adjunct to other chassis bracing such as the new "3.0 racing" items.

Its benefits would seem to be both structural and NVH-related.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has had experience with this type of product.
Many thanks,

replies
Almost every major manufacturer uses cavity foam somewhere in the chassis. Some is for strength some is for nvh some is for both.
I have been tempted to do it as well but have reservations about corrosion...
Corrosion too was my biggest concern but I found out that this foam is considered closed-cell, which means that each cell that makes up the foam structure is completely closed off from surrounding cells which prevents it from acting like a sponge. It is completely safe for this foam to be in contact with water for hours/days/weeks and even months with no adverse effects. However accordin to the supplier, it should never be submerged in contact with water permanently.
I'm not sure if it stiffens the chassis as much as people hope it does. My bet is that it does a lot for sound deadening- which gives the impression of stiffening the chassis because you don't hear as many creaks or rattles.
Be careful with expanding foam. I know someone who broke a cast iron bathtub when he used a little too much between the under side of the tub and the concrete outer wall of his house. Make sure it has room to expand and that you don't use too much.
Good luck.
Oh, and it may be a bit obvious, but if you do the stitch welding AND the foam, do the welding first.
I'm coming in to this thread a little late, but I thought I should add... you need to be very careful where you pour this stuff. Some of the area below the running board is a drainage channel that allows water to run out of the body. Take out your side vent and stick a water hose down there and watch where the water runs out... it drains out pretty much along the entire lower body. You may be clogging some drainage holes if you go pouring this stuff into every hole you can find.

There are expanding foams and then there are expanding foams, there is a right way to do it and then there is a wrong way to do it. Go wrong way and say goodbye to your baby. I remember one Cobra, it wasn't funny.

If you do foam you will still need bracing, if you do bracing foam will not do anything additional for you.
now, there are apprehensions on aftermarket foaming vs foaming from manufacturer as concerns posted (esp on drainage part). I do believe it helps on "sound insulation" but the stiffening of structural may be second only to spot welding or even bracing.

more for high-speed cars as it helps on downforce (opposing lift). ala like F1 (even supercars) where it flat on the bottom of car. yes, they do recomend for track guys if their rides require every available help to improve timings. (btw super GT cars have them)

If all else fails... 2ZZ!!!

hehe damnit midship  u're poisoning me .... anyone have a link to the 2zz specs like this one? http://www.spyderchat.com/1zzfe.pdf ... how much does the 2zz half cut cost nowadays?

....not planning anything immediate for the engine, just collecting info then decide....hehe, transplants may be the easy way to go for power, but from previous experience(s), it does not always go smooth, friends' and own 4g63t....still thinking of using the 'lightweight' 1zz as the base... this article is inspiring somewhat http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/features/0302scc_2000_mr2_spyder/index.html

...any of the members got 2zz? hihi definitely want a test drive, as passenger also ok......i can understand it's usage on the track, but for town/highway drive, i hardly rev past 6k to get going. that's a 'hmmmmm' from me....feels kinda weird

koolspyda: appreciate the info very much. hehe haven't finished reading and digest but tx dude ;)

transplant is more or less plug-n-play overseas where knowledge on the vehicle is 110%... but in Malaysia you can only plug-n-pray :(

no thanks to the culprits who destroy their "YR2002 internatioanl engine of the year ~1.4L to 1.8L category" by not tendering proper knowledge & mods. ; it is scarce now, the engine locally.

you will be addicted. once an motor enthusiast mod bug hits, you find it isnt enuff. a 2ZZ MRS 200HP, 975kg weight car with right suspension is as fast as 600HP R34 in touge. (that is if you got the balls to run at that speed). 2ZZ spyders in malaysia?? no such thing:_: really:_: . there are tons of swapped 2ZZ spyders info on SC

for a moderate driver a 140HP++ MRS on wheels can be in the tails of a leader of a certain FF 200HP hot hatch; you will of course lose out on dragging big time. but drag races isnt MRS cup of tea. you will have more fun on twisties.

BUT

enjoy it as is. then you will appreciate the adding of mods. as i mentioned before; my opinion is to ride & enhance the handling of the car. its more fun. once your "driving confidence"* has gone a few notches up, the by all means explore the concept 2ZZ.

* the spyder is easy to drive, nimble & road worthy for daily usage. bar elise (which holds the torch for great handling prowness but may be a little unforgiving for daily commuting).
