Arguably the biggest changes to the 2011 Saga, dubbed the Saga FL, is on the exterior that gives it a more spirited and sporty appearance in a move to rope in the younger buyers looking for a small car.

Instead of the previous three variants available, the Saga FL will now only be available in two guises, the 1.3 Standard and the 1.3 Executive, both being available with a four-speed auto or five-speed manual, thus bringing the total number of variants to four. Power still comes from the 1.3-liter Campro engine with 94hp and 120Nm of torque.

Exterior wise, the Saga FL features an all-new front façade with sharper headlights, a new grille, hood, fender and bumper that gives it a very sporty look. Furthermore, the side mirrors get incorporated LED turn signals while the tail lights are now an LED combi unit for better visibility.

Separating the Executive model from the Standard one is the addition of fog lights on the front, newly-designed 14-inch alloy wheels over the 13-inch steelies for the latter and a rear lip spoiler.

Moving to the inside, the Saga FL features new seat fabric and door trim fabric. The Executive variant benefits from a head unit with integrated USB and AUX ports as well as steering wheel mounted audio switches. Safety wise, the Executive model now also gets an airbag for the front passenger. All models now also get powered rear windows.
Some of the changes include doors that open wider, making ingress and egress that mush easier. The boot sports 413-liters of storage space.

“The Saga FL represents the new way of doing things at PROTON. Instead of resting on the popularity and success of the existing Saga, the overwhelming public acceptance motivated us even more to make an already good model even better,” said Datuk Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir, Proton Group Managing Director.

He went on to add that Proton was targeting monthly sales of 6,500 units with a yearly target of 75,100 units, which looks quite achievable considering that since its launch in January 2008, the Saga has garnered an average monthly sales of 6,200 units.

As for the availability of the 1.6-liter Campro in the Saga FL, Syed Zainal explained that Proton are still conducting research on the matter and that it could materialise on the future. He also added that they will be rolling out some major updates for the Campro engine next year, and it could extend out to the Saga FL as well.

As we all know, the updates in question will include the new turbocharged Campro that should find its way under the hood of models like the Exora and some of the other models. Either way, exciting things are in store for Proton next year.
