JOHOR BARU: A group of 23 national service trainees was lost in the
jungle for almost 28 hours during a jungle trekking and navigation
exercise here.
The boys from the Sekakap camp here, who began the exercise about 9am on
Wednesday, were rescued at 1pm yesterday.
Mersing OCPD Deputy Supt Nor Azizan Anan said police were informed at
about midnight that the trainees were lost.
“Thirty policemen were immediately deployed into the jungle, but could
not find the boys because it was already very dark.
“We stopped the search at 6am and resumed at 8am. However, we were still
not able to locate the trainees, and at 10am (we) decided to use a
helicopter,” he added.
The trainees were spotted 1km from the main road.
“They were brought out of the jungle at 1pm. Although they looked
exhausted, all were safe and sound. They were later sent to the Mersing
hospital for a medical check-up before being allowed to return to camp,”
said DSP Nor Azizan.
When contacted, camp commandant Mej Ronzi Mohd Khairan said the exercise
was part of the NS training module.
“All 404 trainees from the camp were involved in this exercise, where
they had to go through four checkpoints in the jungle. The exercise was
scheduled to be completed before 5pm.
“However, while everyone else managed to complete the exercise, this
particular group could not find their way to their third checkpoint,” he
said, adding that all the groups were equipped with compasses and maps.
Mej Ronzi said the 23 trainees had missed their checkpoint by about 5km.
“It was roughly 2km from one checkpoint to another. When the boys failed
to locate their third checkpoint, they kept on moving deeper into the
jungle.
“When the group did not get to their checkpoint by the time allotted, the
trainers started looking for them, but in vain.
“Around midnight, we contacted the police for help,” he added.
