can DIY ?

i thinking...
1. use sand paper or machine sander/dremel with wire mesh bit to remove rust
2. take it to shop with welding machine ask them weld ( what shop got? exhaust shop can ar? )
3. use the putty ppl use for car body to cover it back
4. use find sand paper to make the surface flat again
* But will looks ugly lar .. the putty is visible without new paint
.. but can save cost

how u think? can work or not?

DIY shouldnt be a prob...

make sure u sand it until bare metal... remove the rust completely... then clean the surface n apply putty... then send to shop to paint... if there is a hole.. then need to send to workshop to weld n ketuk.. no point DIYing.. just let them do everything...

fiber is for bumpers n bodykits....

u mentioned rust... means metal panels... i dun think fiber will stick on metal nicely... u can DIY with putty if the rust is only on the surface... if got hole... not dat easy la...

One thing about rust: what you cant see, doesn't mean it's not there. If you cover rust without sanding it to bare metal (with all the rust sanded off) the rust will "grow" and continue to damage your car. So, the best way is to sand off all the rust, replace holes with sheet metal and paint over the whole thing.

The problem with these places that paint cars, they give you a 1 year warranty or 6 months and true enough, after that period of time you see rust bubbles popping up again.

What these guys usually do is remove the paint and apply filler or fiberglass over the rusted area, no doubt it'll look good after paint but it doesn't stop the rust from spreading underneath and after a year and a half you half worse problems because the rust has spread below the surface undetected.

The best are the Brits when they restore their cars. Absolutely amazing jobs these guys do. They weld up every rust spot or just replace the panels and then they use a special primer (etch primer I think) to cover the whole car, this is followed by sanding to achieve smoothness then another coat of primer is applied, more sanding, then paint, sanding, more paint, sanding, buffing and a great finish follows.

Few years back it was said that normal rustproofing that was used in the 60's and 70's for the undercarriage of cars actually contributed to rust because these coatings sagged over time and collected water between the coating and the body. So these days nobody actually uses this black coating (can't remember the name)

Funny thing though when I got my friend's Toyota Celica TA22 welded, the shop guy applied this exact coating! Trust me on this one guys, if you want great protection, nothing beats Hammerite paint. I've used it on the undercarriage of my car and while the rest of the body has rust after the paint job, the undercarriage is still clean! You can get Hammerite from any hardware shop or Carrefour or even Giant I think. My 2 cents here...

(Hehe, as you can see, pretty irritated with this problem and most of our local paint shops, years of seeing your car rust after a paint job does that to a guy!)

most of the panel beaters are "artist". I've seen them working and even advice them abt proper rust prevention and metal preparation. They just give me then "what do you know" look....they prefer slapping filler and nothing much else....better still they would advie ppl go get a replacement panels from kreta potong.

The good art/skill of panel beating and car body repair is slowly dying....
