I may not be fully aware of the implications of what im saying here, but here it goes anyway,...I think before all the hype on engines, power to weight, yada yada yada come to play,... you may need to consult sifoos whom are very well versed at putting the chasis and suspensions together, for me theres nothing more fundamental,

Cause face it if the engine cant push you can always get another one, but if the chasis gets twisted cause of the suspension set up while the car moves, then whoa! stand back, you might get an apollo 13 on your hands...and you have to start from scratch...
yep, and it might cause bodily harm too if you're not careful. This project will pose great risks so we must be extremely careful during constructions.

We're copying the Ariel Atom's chassis so I think it would hold up well enough because that chassis is proven in tests before.

Any sifoos here can recommend what we should look out for in the suspension?

yes, realistically it can be done with RM15K++ since I have all the tools and I only needed to buy the materials. I'm going to write up a budget list soon and I'll post it here when I'm done.

The car will not have any radio or aircon. That's what I meant.

i know what you meant la. LOL

i've built one car before, and honestly, you'd arrive about 20-25k too.
you'll see.
that's how much a 'Seven' replica (DIYed) would cost, to be considered well made.

dude, before you go 'Malaysia-Boleh!' gung-ho with the project,
pls have in mind the Ariel Atom's steel is CDS (cold drawn steel) tubing. Same material with roll-cage material = $$$$

of course that's strong and tested la.

suspension? simple layman?
start from the wheels then towards inside.

Hi guys,

If any of you guys are serious about building a race car from scratch, please think twice before you start embarking on and buy all the parts, especially if you're thinking of building one that will out-handle any road cars.

It's an easy project for those that couldn't care less about calculations and simulations, but it's a herculean task for those that cringe at the extra 1 gram on the weight due to lousy optimisation.

I've done it before http://serve.me.nus.edu.sg/fsae
it's not easy, it's gonna squeeze your balls dry and it's going to make you cry when things don't fit.

However, if you're still very determined to build one after reading what I've said, please try and approach Universiti Petronas' Formula SAE team. They came to visit me in Singapore in 3rd quarter 2005 (btw I'm Msian), and we talked over a lot of things because they wanted to start a Formula SAE team. They are your best bet in terms of knowledge and guidance.

And if you must, please start reading up here http://www.fsae.com It is a very good resource forum and most of the posters are Undergrads that doesn't mind sharing information. However, please don't go and start disgracing yourselves by asking stupid questions.

If you need help, you can PM me.

Good luck guys

yes, I've factored that in. I will try to calculate all the costs related to this project first before doing it. I wouldn't want to spend too much money on it.

wow thanks for the info!

I'm a mechanical engineering student in Inti and I fully understand the amount of effort that has to be put in in order for this project to work. I'm not rushing into things because I'm trying to take into account every, and I mean every, aspect of the build.

Has Petronas started a Formula SAE team?

Well I don't know if you're referring to Petronas as in the Oil Company or Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP). UTP has started their Formula SAE project although presently I'm unaware of their progress. I hope to be able to visit them at their campus one of these days to chat up with them.

It's good to know that you fully understand the task ahead. My advise is, you won't succeed doing this alone; find a couple more engineers that share the same passion and talk about it over teh-tarik. Money IS always the issue, not engineering nor calculations if you haven't realise that.

Sure thing, but that's if I go back home to Klang. I'm currently working in Singapore and probably only go home 3-4 times per year, that's also for a few days only each time.

Oh sorry I was referring to UTP.

I've asked a few of my friends and seniors who's interested in cars to join me on this project. So, far, they have found other people, students as well as adults, who are interested in this project also. We're still discussing on all aspects of the build and with my finals next week I'll have to delay this project until next semester, when hopefully, we will have everything worked out.

Yes, money makes the world go round!

Thanks for the support. Really appreciate it.

at least a lil bit easier... rather than building the whole set of engine and such off...custom made the xtractor, exhaust, TB, still possible, but when it goes to engine block, stroker and such, it will be hell..

Most of the car will be built using spare parts from existing cars. We only have to DIY the chassis and maybe the suspension and make all the parts like the steering, gear shifter and pedals fit together.

BTW, anyone know any good workshops that do metal fabrication (welding, shaping and cutting)? And how much does a normal engine jack/hoist cost?

Hey for all of you who visited KLIMS, did you notice the DIY Formula 3 racecar by 2 students of UNITEN?

Random Post Every 5 Minutes

Hello Everyone,

My battery went flat.
Got it hooked up to another car and now seems running fine.

I have not been using the car much over the last few days.

Could it have caused it? Am wondering could it be caused by frequent charging of my mobile in the car?

So, I hope to find out if life span of battery deteriorates with use of devices in the car plugged into the cigarette lighter socket.

Does using of ICE devices also would definitely shorten the battery life?
