zth'ians,

guys, am having problem. whenever my car idle or in free gear mode (I am driving a manual proton putra), or in between the change of gear, it vibrate a lot. It will vibrate more when I on the headlamps (followed by this weird light electricity sound) during nite time. particularly every loose plastic will vibrate in the car. or say maybe during day time, when i use both the windscreen automatic controller (at the side door), the car will vibrate but it is not as bad as a nite (when I switch on the headlamps). Not that it irritates me, but it worries me a lot. I'm a noob btw. Is it because of the voltage supply is not stable (do i need to use one?don't really see/understand clearly it's function). Or is it the timing? or do i need to re-tune my car?

seeking the seniors advice.

thanx.

In neutral (free gear), what's your RPM like?
bro,

maybe i'm not supplying you with enough info .. sorry, say when i start my car, it is at 2000 rpm, not sure what is the meter reading when i'm in neutral .. shouldn't it be at 2000 rpm? does it differ? i'll check when i'm on my way home tonite and update the thread later .. thanx for relpying.

btw,

shanashi, it is not that i don't believe in this voltage stabilizer thingy, only that i do really want to know why it occur and how do we overcome it rather than straightaway fixing it (i wanna learn), anyways, thanx for the link. it do help a lot in me understanding more.

2000rpm at idle is way too high unless you're driving a race car?! But I do understand that at startup some Proton engines tend to go up to 3000rpm but slowly drop.

If your engine is idling at 2000rpm and you're feeling very bad vibrations (even between gear shifts) it could be that your engine isn't firing on all 4-cylinders. Do get back about the idling speed in neutral.

Had the same problem before with my Putra.

I suggest that you have the car tuned by a trusted mechanic and if the problem persist check your engine mountings to see if there are any tear. If there are any change the affected mountings.

any jerks what so ever when driving the car? vantagex is rite, 2000rpm is way too high. Tune it down to 1000rpm. Vibrations alone without any problems with driving is most probably the engine mountings KO and need to change.

bro(s),

the info(s) that i supply you, incorrect. Here is the scenario,

i start my car, it revs up to 2000 rpm, then fall backs to 1000 rpm, stays there for a minute then it falls to 900 rpm. I don't have problem with that. Then i turn on my headlamps, so it starts, it falls down to 800 rpm and every freaking thing starts to vibrate (the most iritating one is my side door window, due to bad workmanship when i install a new sets of speakers). When in idle, i rev to 900 rpm to 1000 rpm, nothing vibrates, but when it falls back to 800 rpm, it vibrates. Then, it'll go up to 900 rpm (no vibration), falls back to 800 rpm (vibrate), during both time, idle and change of gears. Up and down during idle. Is this a common thing? should i not worry or should i do something? a re-tune? or fixing the voltage stabilizer? the mountings? what can effect the tear of the mountings? i'm not a hardcore driver fyi and the car is only 5 1/2 years old.

thanx a million guys.

Souns normal and its hard to say if there really is a problem because with a 5 1/2 year old car it will be normal for some things to vibrate. Your RPM seems alright and no problem there.

Engine mountings can tear for a number of reasons, hard driving, normal wear and tear, bad QC (not uncommon).

Another thing with cars is over the years, screws, bolts and fixings work loose like for example the dashboard screws get loose. Its perfectly normal especially here in Malaysia with our roads and all that. When these screws get loose things start to vibrate.

i see, thanx for the advice. you words comfort me (sounds rather gayish, but what the heck) ahah. maybe i ought to tighten everything up. wondering how i can do that

so now, i don't need the voltage stabilizer rite? or maybe there is and advantage of installing it?

The reason I said your RPM is fine because those days when some cars didn't have airconds, mechanics tuned the engines by turning on the headlights and the radiator fan. You can always get it checked at a Proton SC but chances are its just slightly out of tune.

As for tightening things up (now I sound gayish!) just sit in your car and see what are the things that vibrate. Then tighten accordingly... :-S

it's the mounting. not at a very bad stage but going there. that somehow cause the noise. the engine mount can't hold the engine like the way it should, and when lotsa electricity being used i.e. air-con, headlamps and such, the engine vibrate, which cause the noise.

another possibility is the alternator. maybe the bearing /or there is something wrong with the bearing.

they have yet to check.

guys, is this true? i don't really agree on the second reason.
