Treat for Local Racing Fans as Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Confirms Extra Malaysian Race
Malaysian motorsport fans will have an additional chance to see the spectacular Porsche Carrera Cup Asia action as organisers announce an additional race at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) in May.
The 2006 season of the region’s premier sportscar series will get under way with the opening two rounds run as support races for the Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix on March 18 and 19. Rounds 3 and 4 will now also be held at the state-of-the-art facility as part of a thrilling Asian Festival of Speed weekend scheduled for May 13 and 14.
The provisional race calendar had included a visit to South Korea’s brand new Ansan race track on that date, and organisers hope the event can be reinstated next year.
The new 997-based Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, making its Asian debut in Malaysia next month, was taken through its paces at SIC last weekend by the field of the region’s leading sportscar specialists during the official pre-season test. The awesome new racer, which includes a number of new features such as a sequential gearbox and the MOTEC data logging system, was given an enthusiastic thumbs up by the drivers. “Love it!” was the verdict of Team Vertu’s driver, Briton Nigel Albon.
