e8mr auto??? where is that place lah? i must go there lah... lolz...need to ask if got evo 1.6 vtec or not? LOLZ...

the most obvious thing about evo 7 is the engine head... it's the only evo that has an "evolution" word on it....

waaahahahaha........lancer evo 1.6 vtec turbo:shocked: ......lolzzz i sure buy tat car liao!!

btw....u mean other evos got no evolution word printed on the head but the E7's oni?.....how abt 8 and 9 or perhaps the MR's?

oooo i will be extra carefull..........

TQTQ

e4-6 only got that 16valves written, e7 has an evolution word, e8 nothing written and e9 has the mivec turbo written...

hmm........buying an evo......evo 7 u looking for specifically ? or is there a specific budget u after ?

choosing a recond evo is difficult task, u hear tons of stories, car had very bad accident in jap and was fixed to look like new (check out some other threads here in zth, i recalled seeing a skyline r34 head smash teruk n yet the reworks was made to look like a perfection !!!), car had blown engine b4, car was stolen from singapore more n more n more

but the basics u should REALLY look into is the condition of the car. Yes, condition of the chasis, if there is any special phenomenon to it. I recalled a visitor enquiring for a evo 7, had a choice to choose a great deal with tons of mild mods car condition was great however just becoz of budget difference, the deal was dragged n the car was sold to some other buyer eventually. Later on he bought a evo from another dealer at a slightly cheaper price but the chasis was full of RUST and having headaches to do touch ups and minor corrections here n there......

So wat does dis tell us?.....all in all....choosing a evo....a cult status isnt dat simple....its not just by gauging on....oh the engine is e7, e8 or even e9. or just becoz its cover might be even a e5 or e6 ?? U need to go more than that....for all u know....it was JUST a change of the VALVE COVER, well i seen engines having authentic internals but the valve cover is different though.

Assuming u got the great luck by finding a authentic e7 engine with the e7 chassis, but how abt the rest ? we had members who bought cars dat need a change on the AYC or gearbox malfunctioning probs just after 1 or 2 months of purchase, we also had frens who had engine internal probs dat the car was under performing.......all in all............its a matter of HOW MUCH do u know abt checking WAT EXACTLY is an evo , and of coz ......the biggest tip is...WHERE, WHAT, n HOW to look for in the midst of choosing 1.....not just 1....but the RITE 1

in short all i can think of is.........perhaps u have a buddy or a fren who have experience in an evo....n can help u to give u some pointers...more importantly...u should have a mechanic who is willing to help u out to check the potential ride .....n MOST IMPORTANTLY......is to get a TEST DRIVE.........a car which is problematic, be it engine wise, performance wise, drive train, suspension, etc etc....can be revealed through a thorough test drive.......but of coz, coming back to the basic, u need to know WHAT you should be looking for......

as for me.........your concerns reminds me of the time I was eagerly searching for my ride.........thank goodness i got a great SIFU/bro he was more than willing to help me to search for a gud ride........n of coz when all is almost confirmed, i brought my mechanic down to do a thorough checking to make sure the fundamentals r in the right place. All in all, only small tiny stuff need to be change for example...just the 4 tyres need replacement n oil change. After dat i suffer from no major mechanical failure until my buntuk gets itchy for modding hehehe but of coz the process of modding n facing mechanical or tunning probs is another faithful chapter which is even more tedious in processing.....

Last but not least, wish u have a fruitful hunting....the ppl in here r of coz frendlier to live up with the club name.....all I can say is ......MAY THE FORCE BE WITH U :D

Bro DD, well said, well said!!

Getting the correct one is alike finding a needle in a haystack .... alot of questions than answers .....but ultimately your ride shud provide u trouble free days ahead ....

Aja ,

During hunting u just get 'sifu' DD to help. but have to arrange time with him lar heheheheh

Aja ,

During hunting u just get 'sifu' DD to help. but have to arrange time with him lar heheheheh

hehehe. Me no need to looks more for now lah, since already bought E7 last Jan07 (finally). Lucikly that time, my close mechanic committed to check the car on every single aspects la..underneath, engines, rust, bearings, clutch, mounting etc and the good thing was the dealer allow the car that time to be send my workshop for comprehensive checking!......so after that consider selamat and fully satisfied la.

DD seems must assist bro sulkyb in order to hunt for a good E7!.

So far, my car doing good..did almost 4k kms within less than 2 months (bought milleage wa around 24.5k, now milleage closed to 29k)..run south-north hway very well!. No problems so far except for waer & tear lah. Recent changed brake pad, timing belts etc changed earlier etc. Next major change would be the clutch.
Other no complain lah!.

ok la.....me not sifu la....me just a fellow JEDI like u all are :D

yes like aja had....like i had....brought a trustworthy...a mechanic who knows abt EVO is important....not just any mechanic....coz evo setup involves 4WD, AYC, u need to check the shafts, long shft, prop shfts, drvieshafts if they are in working condition....or if they r already LOOSE liao like something %^&^^* hahaha (just kidding) becoz if the shafts r loose, certain extent is acceptable...too loose of coz means gearings for lsds maybe makan a bit as well....n of coz IMBALANCE SHAFTs will contribute to imblance handling n disturbing effects....well dats why some cars dun run ulu yam too often though ( i think la, shaft must have probs )

well anyways....if u r new to this planet evo....no fren or associate or mechanic near you physically.....dis r the list of things u can actually have a check:

NOW lets begin......visualizing u r stepping into the recond area where the evo lies........dealer recommend u THIS EVO car......take a look at the FRONT....

- check the gaps of the bonnet, the bumper, the lights the fenders alignment.....uneven alignments sometimes r aftermath of shoddy work due to claim workshops (be it msia or jp)
- do not be attracted to the fact that the evo is NICE in front of u....check the paint job...if its TOO NEW...something is not rite...as evo 7 manufacuring date is 2000 or 2001 ......if dealer tells u they refurbish the paint to make it nice....ask them WHY
- then as usual ....buka bonnet take a GOOD LOOK into the engine bay....check all wiring....of coz u wont know which wiring is wat to be exact n specific....but checking the wiring layout as in.......if there is any funny wire protruding here n there ( fact is, the car might have various gadgets hooked up, such as boost controller or meters or more meters......just to make sure the disaseembling is smooth otherwise u may encounter a tough time next time to discover dat some electrical probs occur...worst case being and last thing u ever wanted is a SHORT CIRCUIT)
- then check PAINT JOB in the engine area....if paint job is lacklustre of color...its norm...coz due to mothernature, the grease, time will fade the color...in fact originally the color in engine bay is SOLID look.....if its TOO METALIC....something is ALSO NOT RITE.....meaning to say....maybe had a crash, n the paint job touching up....
- then check the front beam under the hood..take a CLOSE DEEP LOOK into the bottom area of the radiator, there is a horizontal BEAM, check the entire SUB FRAME....u should make sure that this looks normal and not having RUST or funny looking alignments....
- after the above checks, more or less chassis in the front is alrite....then take a DEEP CLOSE look at the engine itself.....usually u cant spot a healthy engine with it.....u need to rev it let it running.....LISTEN (macam beyonce sing the listen song, haha just kidding) listen carefully....squat down at either side and listen carefully....if there is any metal knocking sound....if got....meaning internals maybe faulty.....dat is a MAYBE.....also check the bearing the belts movement if its smooth enuff
- then radiator n fan check on the temperature handling.......dis is best done after a test drive.....to see if the fan is kicking in properly.....DO NOT ignore this as a problematic fan sign...maybe a result dat the car was MODDED earlier on, (the history maybe a worst case scenario, had a burnt gasket b4).......of coz which had been replaced.....
- check the manifold area, dat is the so call exhaust manifold or alternate term HEADER to listen if there is any leaking noise.....stock manifold is hard to crack....but have come across FITTING is problem therefore there is a gap on the manifold with the turbo....this part is at the FLANGE area....
- inspect the ENGINE MOUNTINGS.....4 pieces....usually only 2 pieces able to see...coz the other 2 very hidden up....check if engine mounting is in working condition
-intercooler, do not be DECEIVED by seeing wording like JUN or HKS or Greddy on it, sometimes any Intercooler can be sprayed on with wordings, I actually was offered by some shop to do it last yr. Meaning to say dealer may tell u its a HKS intercooler, but of coz, its just as stock as any stock intercooler.

Now after this, if can take a TEST DRIVE.....the test drive is the MOST IMPORTANT STAGE..........
- Gears engaging....should be smooth....however...old n dirty gear old could result to unsmoothness....dis needs to be double check by a few actions, while driving and cross check the gears when the car is stationery
- testing the ACD n AYC.....CHECK if the 3 traffic lights r ON....( like F1, all ON means got fault la, u need to use the MUTII or MUTIII to check on the fault light then, usual cases could be DRIVE SHAFT probs, or AYC PUMP, or even electrical probs )
- testing the AYC / 4WD in action....go 1 by 1......1st TARMAC, the grip should be there, even though u maybe equip with snow tyre but there grip should be the strongest of the 3 settings TARMAC, GRAVEL, SNOW; go with slow corners, then try more corners, watch n FEELLLLLLLLLLLL how the car behaves.....a problematic AYC will at times sound (or should I call it MOAN ) it out to u.....with tuk tuk tuk....or sometimes noise could varie....
- BRAKES....check the rotors ....b4 the drive, feel it with your midas touch......check if the inner plate is alignning with the edge of the rotor, any uneveness will result in wobbling feel, most probably rotor is gone or sometimes a WARP DISC or uneven disc; the braking feel should be EASY GOING, if much effort is needed, it could aso be with the pads, this can be verify by checking at the pads too.
- the driving feel can be in a few sub stages, slow drive, cruising, mini launch(drag) if can .....to check a few things such as , gearings (any faulty syncros), shaft shafts ( imbalance shafts ) , handling should be smooth .....uneven handling could result in crooked rims, alignment lari, or supension link probs
- listen to the sound of the engine , feel the response, the turbo , if the feel is too sluggish, most probably it is wiser to walk away from this choice
- also take note on hear changing, feel the clutch ....if its almost time to worn off....or problematic gearing or clutch plates

Finally After the drive, check the INTERIOR carefully, a lot of ppl were too happy or excited with the drive and often miss to check the interior, try to dig the carpet at the side of the chasis to make sure there r no DENTS, or funny looking holes (ex- roll cage installation ) or kereta potong sign
- check the aircon, if there is any foul smell
- additional :if u have a sunroof, make sure the sunroof works without HASSLE ( meaning sunroof must be able to close smoothly and align with the roof lining well); watch out for WORN rubber linings at the glass area and windows area, u do not wan to be singing RAIN DROPS FALLING ON MY HEAD ( when there is a on going thunderstorm out there and u r stuck in a jam)
- as for others such as recaro seats, dashboard, door trims seat belts, make sure they r all in place nice n steady.......your airbags r dependent on your seatbelts functioning...

After dat, the last piece of area is your TRUNK, check the in trunk where the spare tyre is, watch for some UGLY GLUE marks on the chasis, it means dat the back is INTACT like a virgin, dis is done during manufacturing.....watch out for rust.......jap cars r usually without RUST proof

Well hope this summs up a bit for u ....happy hunting...n once again MAY THE FORCE BE WITH U :)

DD is not a normal Guru ...he is a super Guru. hehe :)
Thanks for the superb write up.

DD,

A very well appreciated write-up you have put there, thank you very much.

infact leslie him self was also kind enuff to meet me recently and explain things i had to ask. His advice was quite detailed but yours is through! Thanks again.

This brings me to a unit I have seen recently and perhaps keen to buy pending approval of my loan and I have decided to bring the car to Ah kits place to have it checked out.

On what I have learned so far and my experience testing this car physically and visually here are my results.

Exterior:

one problem, both side fenders have been open up b4. through check from the front and also the beam that supports the radiator does not show any accident. no rust visible ori paint still there intercooler fins bent a little but no dents.
My query to why the there are gaps between chasis and the fender where the screws sits is coz the had to remove the or loosen the fenders so they can change the lights to e8 ones. Altough one light has a broken kaki whihc they glued back. rest of the car body seems fine. Mind you im no expert like you and perhaps you have a better eye that myself when it comes to detecting damage on a car's body. opened the doors and checked the spot welds all ok. opened the trunk and yes that bladdy white colour glue, is there.
my concern it the front two fenders. got gap! how arr?

engine bay:

car idle's fine. just tat gt lil vibration. I had posted abt it. but the thread gt lost due to system reload 7/3/07. its now gone. Lemme explain again.
visible tat engine doesnt sit in one place. very minimal vib's if u see carefully can notice wan. wat i did was tap the throttle from 850rpm to 1250 rpm, the vibs get more. u can feel when sitting in the car. if tekan to approx 3-4k rpm dun have.
temp is ok aircond is fine. oh yeah i think gt one pulley makin noise dunnow which one. besides tat engine neat. no messy stuff in there.

interior:
not too bad if i should say so. not perfect tough. BLaddy ori steering not there. gt sum stupid giant 'wan tan mee bowl' like omp steering. its a quick release one. so the srs light will be lit cos 1 air bag dun haf.

test drive:

not too bad. im not used to an evo but leslie told me to do some stuff. i didnt try to the extent he said laaaa......scared. but cornering was a nice experience. car handle nicely. no funny sound but perhaps the powersteering maybe gonna kong. so some noise when i do u-turn, turn the steering to da max.!
no drive shaft noises. 3 light u spoke abt lit up when turn the ignition and goes off with just tarmac still on..............

what else ah...? aiyoh fingers paining leh!.....this shld be abt it.

My main concern is the two fenders and the engine moving a little.

DD perhap with this info you can shed a little more advice.

appreciate your/others comments

cheers

kind regards

btw car loc: autocity cheras white colour e7.

I suspect the jap use CF fender b4 , but change back to original part since he want to sell the car. As for the engine movin a bit , 850-1250 try to check the engine mounting.

SULKYB,

Fender gap a bit too much ? how wide is wide ? have u estimated the abnormal gap length ? if its anything within 2-5mm i think its pretty much acceptable, nontheless, mitsu cars r well known for their inconsistency when it comes to assembly, even toyota has it; as long as it is NOT TOO WAY OFF as compared to others, I guess its pretty much acceptable. Saying so, I have yet to view the car, thus hereby I have said is very much with benefit of doubt rendered.

Idling vibration, is this VIOLENT, do u feel shaky ? or have u stand aside n observe and watch how violent is the idling ? My 1st guess goes to mounting, however, there r 4 mountings which maybe a bit hard for u to VERIFY all in 1 go unless at a workshop. Apart from engine mounting, timing could be another guess, dirty thorttle body, weak spark plugs, insufficient electricity, wiring ??? however since u r with STOCK ECU, all should be well.

In summary, from your feedback, I would say, on paper, 70% bodes pretty well (this is solely based on what u have feedback according, as I have NOT SEEN nor tested the car personally). The rest is a thorough check by a mechanic or a evo owner who knows the car well.

p/s: Sometimes, we may own the car, but not necessarily know it by heart. It is a expensive and tedious process more like (I would say), a painstaking growing learning process to know the car better. Therefore individuals knowledge on car, difference in experience level is all dependent on HOW MUCH they actually DRIVE n MOD the car. maintaining a car doesnt take a rocket scientist to do so, its more towards the modding era where you UNLOCK a whole wide perspective and facing various symptoms of the car that throws it to your face. In short a pandora's box :D

champion white.....a very nice choice :D

hmm i've seen this evo b4.Nearly bought it but pricing nego failure..hahah i have the pic 2. Might share to you here later on if you wanted 2. cheers

Good Morning Guys,

Appreciate your comments and thoughts very much.

Bang Azizi,

Even thats what I feel. Tapi maybe ada sebab lain. I really wish its mountings then lesser headache. harap harap itu jap main cf barang and not smash the car some where.

Bro DD,

The fender lari issue is more like this. When the hood is closed the gap between the fender and the hood on the right side assuming u are facing the car and steering on yr left. right side gap from the top all good n nice and then in the middle almost kissing and then towards the light ok again. the left side almost perfect like nutthing happen. when open the hood u see oni can know tat fender has been opened b4 coz gap oso visible. so i bising at them bla bla bla. the saels man said 100% no acc. if got and not my fautl he refund every sen to me. he said they will try and adjust. so recently i went to see da car. they have adjusted it.
now ah the damn thing is better but got small gap where the fender meets the hood near the lights. approx 4mm or maybe 3 lah.

engine is not vib. vigl'ly. just lil. u haf to see properly can surely notice.
while idiling if u sit on the drivers seat can rasa a lil bit. but when tap the throttle from 850 to 1250rpm gt more vibs. if constantly hold at 3-4k rpm dunt haf. oso one bladdy pulley kee kooo kee koo but still slight.

at this moment any colour will do as long as its an unreg 7 with good condition.

S'Stream,

heya, did it have an ori steering when u saw it.? did u test the car? comments?
u got pics too....pls pm to me. many thanks. yes, they not very nego-able ppl. once the final price is out the just buat dunnow more like wanna buy u buy lah dowan done! got others tat will come. if only there were as many evos just like scoobys these days gone laa they all.

thanks alot guys.

Cheers

Yeah the seller is damn 'lansi's haha.Saw and sit inside the car however never get to
test coz the seller 'lansi's.Yeah its OMP steering but with Bride full bucket sit. However, that's
not ori e8MR headlamp coz the lense is E7.Moreover, the headlamp cover is resealed with glue. Engine
side quite ori to me as not much mod. This car came with the fire lightings located below the passanger
side dashboard. The headlamp is not able to be projected meaning there is not control panel for your
headlamp to be adjusted. This is what i can recall la bro coz i've been there once only and i left
bcoz of the lansi behaviour.
One more thing.Check ori color code at the chasis plate holder. This will indicate whether is ori
white or other color.
Provide me your email i will send to you the pic.

S'Stream,

hi hi,

wah, got bride meh?i saw it was ori recaro........when u saw. yes yes quite lansi, esp the speckky big sized guy. i dunt quite understand the explanation abt the lights.......what do u mean? if its e7 how come its different? they change the cover ah?> bladdy hell........yes yes one light got glue and one kaki broken.........aisay i never see lah the plate. nvm must go check again this weekend..........

mail me at [email protected]

thanks bro

cheers

p/s: hey any idea if tat omp steering is ori ah?> how to check?
