What type of fish can last?

I used to keep 30 neons in a big horlick jar, along, i have a jawa leaf plant bound to a piece of wood in the center of the jar, then i keep some dori's to keep the scavenge the leftover food.

neons are very nice fish, quite hardy also. there are oso another type than the neon, but also very reflective in color, and body size about the same as neons, maybe you will want to mix. but neons are not cheap for the size you got them for.

dori is a type of catfish, very very cute tiny tiny dori, comes in a lot of species, got albino, got some is black, stripes, dotted. usually about half inch size. very hardy as well.

blue acara is a type of cichlid, freshwater.

another suggestion is, you keep a tank of tiger barbs. there are the normal striped, green bodied, and albino. so maybe you keep 5 of each. and you have a very busy aquarium. but they are not friendly fish. will kacau other fish.

*anyway, most of the aquarium filter i saw nowadays are for big aquarium, means the motor pump is very strong and the water squirt out from the pump is very fast and high pressure. not suitable for your normal small aquarium, especially for your small fish. will recommend you to get the cheapo box/sponge filter that run on the air pump.
J4X,

I dont really like Tiger barb fish, to me, they're very agressive.
Will sure to attack other fishes in the same tank.
I was thinking of keeping either neon tetras or guppy fishes.
Do you know which pet shop sells female guppy fishes ?
They're very easy to breed, last time i had alot of them, then gave away already.
My red tail golden arowana died a few years back, really miss the fella.
from so small, keep it till grew quite big then died a mysterious death. Cause of death; unknown.

What kind of fishes are you keeping at the moment ?

guppy ar? hehe, i sucks at keeping guppy, they never last more than a week in my aquarium.

female guppy, you can try the Pudu fish market, is very near to Pudu wet market. A lot of stall sell fish there, and you can see all type of fish. Becareful though, you may end up with infected or low quality fish. On the other hand, you may also get rare species or high quality fish at a cheap price. I got a scissor tail fighting fish for only RM1.

tiger barbs will attack other fish if you keep very little of them, get more than 5 and they will play wif each other.

guppys and neons, I will go for neons.

Now I have a flower horn, and an albino african cichlid (4got wat species) leftover from my previous african cichlid community. My fishes are now in absolutely poor condition, there's no aeration and I have give up on them. Cichlid are fishes of very high maintainance, especially the mess that they can cause, you need very good filtration system which I don't have the money to invest on. You also need a large tank. Need the proper chemical to tune the water condition. A very beautiful african cichlid community is like a marine community, VERY BEAUTIFUL! But my attempts to plant PLANTS in the community result in disaster bcoz these fish don't like PLANTS bcoz it doesn't exist much in their habitat. Waste a few hundred bucks there on various of these fish.

Used to keep a Pacu (fake piranha) which ate half of my Toman bcoz I 4got to feed it. The Pacu end up on my auntie's maid's dinner plate.

I like to keep rare species, kept a few last time, but most die after some time cause by neglect. My 3 minute temperature heheh.

cool...really nice blue acara... those blue water in aquarium is shone by a blue light o something that put inside the water to keep it blue?.. i alwiz like a blue colour water for aquarium...

haha .. i dont like tiger barb, they're not very nice to look at.
guppies and neon tetras on the other hand are colourful fishes,
very good when the light is ON and when girls see .. Haha..
provided the aquarium is nicely set up.

I heard those nice liveplants need co2 tank or something then pump the
gas inside the aquarium ? thats the requirement to keeping nice plants.
But to me, its too much of a hassle to put plants, stones and what not.
Prefer it to be bare so cleaning would be a very simple task. I'm lazy ..

How big is a PACU and how do they look like ? any pics ? ;)

The water is blueish bcoz of the light.
The prefered water color depends on what type of fish you keep.
Like most marine fish, most like the water clear wif a tint of blue.
But most of the freshwater fish, especially peacock fish or those fish that are red in color, people will like to keep them in black water. The water is not black in color, but the water is brownish but clear, smells good, and is actually clean.

Artificial CO2 is needed if your fish vs plants is not balanced, needed when your plant is more than fish. more importantly for plant is lightning and fertilizer. you also need fish who will not disturb the plant and provide enough CO2 for the plant. On the other hand, you will need a big tank to have larger volume of water to store more oxygen so that both your fish and plant don't suffocate at night when you turn off the lights. Jawa fern and Jawa leaf is very hardy plants and spread very easily, others, no eye see.

Pacu is like the red belly piranha. Is like your seafood dinner 'bak chong'. When I buy mine, its only 3 inches, and within months grown into a foot length. Pretty macho fish, got gal come your house, you can throw in some fishes and see the Pacu gobble them up. You can also see its sharp teeth. Pacu is by nature a vegetarian, but mine eat anything.

i think starved it too much liaw la...so it will eat any thing ..hehehe...

last time i kept arowanna ....easy to rear...feed once a week, very clean cos it eat frsh food ma.....

arowana is the best fish to keep ! its quite smart also, can recognize ppl one.
when it sees me or my dad then it will be active cause we're the one who feeds it.
the best fight is when you give centipede, got a bit of fight between the two ..

yeah, heard that if you feed it something red, it will look nicer aka red'der.

prawns, centipede???

arowana taste damn good too, my tuition teacher caught a green arowana last time, bcoz got nothing to keep it, huge fish, they cook it on the spot. hhehehe.

i think i want to rear different types of colorful fishes
any suggestion on wat fish and how many each species?

Whoever said fancy guppy is an easy fish to keep and breed is BS. If you are keeping them for fun, they are easy to keep. If you are gonna breed them, you have to run through a serious breeding program and many tanks are needed to have the fish separated and marked properly.

Fancy guppy doen't exist in the wild and these fish are highly genetic engineered. If you don't keep your fish separated or breed them without some basic genetic knowlege then your female guppy will drop nothing but junks. :)

I haven't bought any fishes yet, but I have some tortoises. These are normal tortoises, there are 2 more different tortoises. The other one the neck damn long can bite people one (RM 35), while the other RM 55.

My custom tortoise tank. :P

40cm x 40cm, height 10cm

Fish project coming soon.

get a pair of toman harimau...tomans are the best...dun get sick, no need oxygen, eats anything and they look as ferocious as they are....dun get those mixbreed toman...get the ori toman harimau...when baby they will have stripes running from head to tail, orange & black color...as they grow bigger the stripes will disperse n become a pattern...i used to collect my tomans teeth after each feeding session...sure got one or two fall off wan...

Cichlid is quite a good fish to keep as well, lots of color variations but don't keep with other breed of fish coz it's quite agressive in nature.

Since it is in the office it is advice that your put a few layer of filteration. It will keep those busy work (lazy) away from water changing for weeks.

Hm... just wondering, the few layers of filteration u mentioned, any specific stuff? Or just plain few layers of sponge(i doubt so)?

Kinda need a better filteration system compared to the current sponge only system for my bigger fish back at home.

The best way is having different compartments from the biggest rock to the finest sand than lastly the sponge. Better to have the water drain to the bottom and have the filteration compartment stored at the bottom.

Hm... unfortunately, when i bought my aquarium, i didn't know much and bought those with the filteration compartment at the side  Now i'm stuck with 2 vertical compartments for the filter. But i guess i could still give this filteration a try.

Hm... Basically, the first level of filteration would be those pebbles(which looks quite a bit like the ones that are laid on the ground before a road is tarred), second layer of dead corals, and third layer of rough sand, fourth layer of fine sand, and lastly, the sponge?

I don't know how much is your current filteration compartment but you can try to make more compartment out of the current one if possible, GRexer.

What fish are you keeping? I'm keeping fancy guppy, half black tuxedo....
