[QUOTE="FatAssRubber, post: 2801361, member: 48972"] hi guys, It is interesting to hear some comments on torque vs hp. Before we can even start to compare which are we looking for, we need to understand the fundamentals of hp and torque. The definition of torque would be force in lb or newton or kg(which is a derivitive of newton. 1kg=9.8 newton) and multiply that with the distand which create a lever action in in, ft or m,cm. which most time explain a static condition. hp however, is a dynamic condition. when we want to compete on power of our cars, we send for dynos. have anyone thought how the cowboys compare their horses?? yup, a race, of a known weight over a distant. primitive but accurate. with both torque and hp is derive from element of force, distance and mass, if is merely a mathematical calculation related. if a dyno is set properly, all hp and torque in lb.ft will intercross at 5252rpm. That’s the only mathematical way of calculating torque and hp. And computers on dynos use that calculation too. No ifs, no buts about that. The thing is, on any dyno chart, below 5252 rpm the engine's torque number will always be HIGHER than its horsepower number, and above 5252 rpm the engine's torque number will always be LOWER than its hp number. At 5252 rpm the hp and torque numbers will be exactly the same. That’s the holy grail of measuring power since the days of James Watt in the 1700’s. But the fallacy to me is that horsepower is just an imaginary thing cos, to me, horsepower SELLS the car but torque DRIVES the car. I’d never take anything at face value especially coming from the Japanese car marketers. There are the ones who are confusing the whole issues of hp figures because it has to look good so that the average Joe’s will buy more. so, answer to your question is questionable and i agree fully with jinkl, what are you looking for. if you want torque according to what we have establish here, probably you want a smaller turbo, fast spooling to give you peak at 3200 to 6000. if hp, then you want a big turbo to start spooling at 4500 and peak at 6000 and hell break loose at 7500. and of course you are to drive your car everyday on the road, you want torque and not hp. i hope that enlighten some of us here. do email me if you want to discuss or debate more on this. its my pleasure. have fun.
