The World Rally Championship (WRC) seemed like it failed to clear the jump following the exit of many works teams from the series a few years back but things are heating up once again on the dirt trails of the WRC.

Word has it that Saab, under new owners Spyker, will be making a return to the twisties of the WRC for the first time sine 1979.

At this point in time, the details are understandably dripping through but from what can be gathered, Spyker’s top dogs have exchanged words with the WRC organizers on the possibility of entering the series in 2012.

A source from Autosport confirmed that the initial meeting has happened and that there’s a huge amount of enthusiasm from both parties. Just like Mini, that’s making a comeback to the WRC, Saab has buckets of heritage in the WRC scene and a return to the series would make sense to raise the brand’s image again in the automotive world.

If the move does fall through, Saab’s machine of chose would most likely be based on the soon-to-be-built 9-2. The 9-2 is expected to be built on a Mini Cooper platform and will probably be powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, along the lines of Mini’s return with their Countryman.
