lancer evo 2 giving problems

i have a mitsubishi lancer evo2 and the other night while driving the engine just bowed down and the check engine light came on, i stopped the car turned it off then restarted it and it was fine again. after that it will do the same problem again when goin forward sometimes. can anyone please give me some advice on what the problem may be.
