Man killed in bid to nab pervert
By R. Sittamparam

MASAI, Mar 12:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was the most natural thing for P. Hamsa Ahmad to do. Over the years, he had been the first one in the crowd to go after snatch thieves and robbers.
So when the 48-year-old (picture left)saw a man stealing some women's underwear from a neighbour's house at Taman Kota Masai, here, he swung into action.

But his act of civic consciousness ended in death.

The only consolation for his family was that police arrested a 36-year-old factory worker in connection with the case.Hamsa, a father of eight and an active Rela member, was returning home from a sundry shop when he saw a man stealing the undergarments.

He chased the suspect and was soon locked in a scuffle with him. Hearing the commotion, son Hamzan, 15, and some neighbours went to his aid.

Said his eldest son Abu Bakar: "But before they could reach my father, the thief pushed him and he fell and hit his head on the road.

"Family members and neighbours rushed my father to a nearby clinic. The doctor said his heartbeat was weak.

"He was then sent to the Pasir Gudang polyclinic where he was pronounced dead." Abu Bakar, 24, a technician at a factory, said his father had on many occasions prevented snatch thieves and robbers in the area.

"My father is a hero and our family has always been proud of him.

"Although I'm now forced to take on the burden of looking after my family, I will be proud to follow in my father's footsteps in trying to prevent crime and help others," he said.

Johor Baru (South) police chief Senior Assistant Commissioner II Hashim Mohd Yusof said police arrested the suspect near the scene of the crime
