It doesn't require rocket science to point out how cars have literally grown from the yester-years till late. It doesn’t require a measuring tape to see how the current 6th generation BMW F30 3 Series has grown since the E21 bowed to the public for the first time in May of 1975.

BMW now looks to plan a rear-wheel drive 1 Series sedan to become the ‘spiritual successor’ of the four-door E30 3 Series by dialling in the light flick-ability of the first M3s.

The upcoming 1 Series generation of sedans will serve three main purposes and the first on the agenda will be that it‘s got to be light-weight, compact and it has to be a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD).
Second, is that BMW won’t be looking to be left out of the competition with upcoming additions of Audi’s A3 Sedan and Mecedes-Benz CLA.

Lastly, BMW wants to add the 1 Series category in order to help them get closer to their sales target of 2 million car by 2020.
It’s not clear s to the specifics that will be going under the bonnet of the 1 Series, but there is speculation of both a 4 and 6 cylinder engine heading in there, coupled with BMW’s xDrive AWD system. There may also be room for a potential electric version, but that’s all still hear-say till we get closer to 2015 – their projected sale date.
