TOYOTA MR-2
1984.6 : In 1984, Toyota introduced the MR-2(AW11) which is the first midship car in Japanese sport car history.
The MR-2's engine was a midship layout to create the optimum weight distribution. The 4A-G 1.6 liter DOHC engine, which have been a highly acclaimed engine on the AE86, have been adopted for the MR-2 G and the MR-2 G-limited. The AW10 used the 3A-LU SOHC engine.
1986.8 : MR-2 has even more power with a 4A-G supercharger engine producing 145PS.
1989.10 : The new MR-2(SW20) was introduced. The chassis's performance was improved, and it was 200mm longer in length, 80mm longer in wheelbase and about 150kg more heavy in weight than the old model. The SW20 MR2 was powered by the 3S-GTE turbocharged L4 DOHC with intercooler engine which produced 225PS. And 3S-GE L4 DOHC engine which produced 165PS was also available. Front/rear brakes adopted the ventilated disc brakes.
1991.12 : All versions got the larger 15 inches tires and brake and the chassis's performance were improved.
1993.10 : Peak horsepower was the turbocharged model 245PS / NA model 180PS.
1996. 2 : The MR-spider (open top model) was introduced by TTC (Toyota TechnoCraft).
1996. 6 : All MR-2's were sold with additional equipment of the dual SRS(Supplemental Restraint System) airbag and the sports ABS which utilized revolutionary state of the art technology giving brake control for all road surface conditions.
1997.12.- 1999. : The 2.0-liter 3S-GE engine was changed into new BEAMS engine with VVT-i( Variable Valve Timing-intelligent ) that produced 200 horsepower and 21.0kg-m of torque.
