Audi unveiled its all-new sleek five-door coupe A7 Sportback with its crosshairs locked firmly on the Mercedes-Benz CLS, BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo and the Porsche Panamera.

Based firmly on the Sportback Concept from last year, not much has changed apart from the usual bits that never make the transition from prototype to production. Audi claims the A7 Sportback is the best of three worlds, namely the sporty elegance of a coupe, the comfort of a sedan and the practicality of a station wagon.

The A7 Sportback is based on the underpinnings of the next generation A6 but with a lower roofline, seating for four and a more practical rear hatch. It also gets a retractable rear spoiler much like the one on the Panamera.

Measuring up at 4.97-meters in length and 1.91-meters wide, the A7 Sportback is only 1.42-meters high to give it that sleek and coupe-like silhouette. Rear luggage capacity stands at 535-liters and can be increased to a massive 1,390-liters with the split rear seat backrests folded down.

Engine options currently stand at two each for petrol and diesel, with all featuring direct injection, an energy recuperating system and stop-start tech.

Petrol engine options are the 2.8-liter FSI and a 3-liter TFSI that will both be mated to Audi’s dual clutch S-Tronic transmission and will feature Quattro all-wheel drive.

The 2.8-liter power plant pumps out 204hp and 280Nm of torque that will power the A7 Sportback to a 100km/h from a standstill in 8.3-seconds. Top speed is 235km/h. The supercharged 3-liter V6 on the other hand produces a much more competent 300hp and 440Nm of torque that will help it do the century sprint in 5.6-seconds and onto a limited top speed f 250km/h.

In oil burner mode, two different tunes of the 3-liter V6 TDI will be offered. The higher spec version will get 245hp and 500Nm of torque that will hit the tarmac through the S-Tronic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive. The base model diesel gets 204hp that will be channeled through a conventional auto box and only to the front wheels.

As always, expect a more performance-oriented version in S7 and RS7 guise that will firmly have the Panamera Turbo in its sights.
