I think I have infected my HDD but I am not sure what it is. I got the latest antivirus definitions but after scanning it shows no infection.

I'm running Windows XP Pro on nForce m/b, 256mb ddr ram, 40gb 7200 maxtor hdd, amd 1.2ghz, soundblaster live!, liteon cdrw, sony cdrom.

My old HDD had this problem I think it crashed but I also think it is a virus of some sort. Windows XP won't load and I get this blue screen after windows logo startup for a few seconds and the HDD never stops reading. The error messsage is unmountable_boot_drive. But it could be detected in the BIOS.

Later I got myself a new HDD then later the old m/b and ram acted up. I changed the m/b and got new ram too. Now everything was working fine until I got back the old hdd after claiming warranty.

Connected it the first time it overriden my new HDD as primary master. Checking in the BIOS its capacity was 60gb which was wrong. Then changing it to slave it could not be detected by the BIOS. Removing all the jumpers it can be detected in the BIOS and correct capacity which is 30gb.

Then in windows I used partition manager to format it so it can be accessible.

After testing it abit it look fine so I removed it and sold it off to a friend who wanted a cheap hdd. After removing it my current hdd is acting weird.

The other day after booting inside windows I left it alone for one minute before trying to play a game it crashed with a blue screen error. Something about "memory". Then now and then it does not boot. Just now it did not boot and had no display but I could see that the hdd was being accessed the light never stop blinking.

After on/off a few times it booted then I got online to check and send this.

I don't know what kinda virus it is but I need help before my system cannot boot at all.

maybe it's something wrong with the hdd
try going to the manufacturer's site for their dianostic prog

well i did get the blue screen once but i dont know what the error number was
it was a hdd problem

sorry can only speculate on yours seraph

u do over clock ?
is this HDD which is originally install the OS ?
mine was the same case where i clone my old HDD stuff into the new HDD....

check your cpu temperature...clear CMOS..or set everything to default setting in BIOS

everything is the same.

just plugged that warranty claim hdd in and i get the feeling my pc got problem oredi.
kenot start this and that
windows xp feels like a time bomb. :(

well last time i did encounter the same problem.. my windows can't start at all... forgot wat the steps i did.. something like this la..

start ur pc... after the bios loading press f8... get into a screen asking wat u wan to start... then press duno wat num for safe mode.. should get into windows safe mode... do scandisk n defragment.. then restart... should b ok then...

another choice is take out ur HDD.. plug it into another pc.. should b xp OS system 1 la.. then use that pc to check errors on ur HDD... fix it n plug back into ur own pc.. start the pc then u should hav no problems getting into ur windows...

after that get some software to fix ur registry... mayb got problems in it...

aihs...i always face this problem lat time...with my old pc...kekeke

what i did is...

i took off all the ram i got...then on the pc...reset a few times....then pu tback the ram...then on the pc...then...only the screen will on.

can give us more details on your system? and what other stuff did u do your pc... overclocking... tampering with BIOS... etc etc... pls list down coz it's hard to diagnose what problems you're facing...

also... how did u install win xp... how did u partition.. drives formatted with NTFS or FAT ? ... did u install win xp on a clean and new hdd? or was it already partitioned when u installed?

simple things like your cables inside the pc blocking air ventilation could heat up the cpu and freezes your pc...

cheers

okay okay....

this is one of the MAJOR fixes in Windows XP SP2

in WinXP SP1
1. if you're using IDE ATA HDD
2. using slower speed 40pin hdd cable instead of 80pin
3. if you formatted the filesystem to NTFS and installed WinXP SP1, WinXP beta or WinXP Gold (original pre-SP1)

It comes down to an inconsistency on how the IDE specification handles caching. What most likely has happened is that the NTFS transaction logfile ($logfile) has become out of sync with the drive. This happens when the OS performs write
through caching and the drive instead holds the data on its hardware cache and then tries to write it out in a non-deterministic method. This becomes a problem when there is a surprise shutdown and the hardware cache is flushed before it is written to the drive.

When booting up to Win XP you may get a error that reads "Unmountable Boot Volume". This is probably because your boot.ini file is messed up.

So, what do you do about it, panic and try to mount your boot in your computer...... No that is probably not a good idea.

You can boot to the XP cd and when you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R
You will get a dos prompt
Then type "chkdsk /p" without the quotes and hit enter
When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter
"Y" and enter at the prompt
Then type "exit" and hit enter
The system will now reboot into Windows

If for some reason that don't work for you, you can boot to the recovery console like above and...
Type "chkdsk /r" then enter
When done type "exit" and hit enter.
This will take longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

I hope its all clear to you all now its NOTHING to do with overclockings and other idiotic stuff. Its a in-built problem with the original Windows XP, so patch it up with SP2 ;)
