Fraudster who drove Bugatti Veyron into lake gets one year behind bars!

11

If you ever had the chance to own a car like the Bugatti Veyron, what will you do with it? We are sure that some of the answers will include maxing it on the Autobahn or maybe taking it to the limits at places like the Nurburgring. But one owner decided to take it to the unthinkable and drove this 1000-horsepower engineering marvel straight into a lake.

The poor 2006 Bugatti Veyron met its demise under the hands of Andy House back in 2009, where he called the insurance company the following day after the crash and filed a claim worth USD 2.2 million (RM 9.45 million). At first, he claimed that he crashed the Veyron when he was reaching for his mobile phone, but then he changed his story and said that a pelican had flown in front of the car.

If he stuck to the mobile phone version of the story, it would have been much more believable. Unfortunately for House, the whole scam went into the drain when he was actually recorded at the moment the Veyron was rolling on the streets and into the lake with not a single pelican in sight. It was also discovered that to ensure the car was a total write-off, he purposefully left the engine running after ditching it in the lake.

House was sentenced to serve one year and one day in a federal prison, as well as paying back USD 600,000 (RM 2.58 million) to Philadelphia Indemnity, a local insurance company.
