UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd, today concluded the 10th anniversary of its environmental program, the Toyota Eco Youth Challenge at a two-day convention and exhibition held in Grand Dorsett Hotel, Subang.

The environment program which was established in 2001 is in tandem with the company’s corporate philosophy of improving the quality of life and contributing to the society. Furthermore, it is in line with the government’s call for organizations to embark on Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives through various channels. The TEY, which is jointly organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Education has been widely accepted and has received overwhelming response throughout the years.

Toyota Eco Youth is a program created for secondary school students and teachers to learn about environmental issues and to motivate them to do their part in saving the environment, starting from within their school compound.

Both teachers and students can identify an environmental issue in their school and by using the ‘Problem-Solving Action-Oriented Approach’; which also requires strategic implementation and research skills, the issue will be tackled with a sustainable method.

This year, celebrating its 10th anniversary, the participation of eight of their previous school champions battled against one another. The championship was held over a period of six months, and followed by a Convention and Exhibition. The Toyota Eco Youth 2010 – Battle of the Eco Champion participants were: Sek Men.Keb (SMK) Labuan, Labuan; SMK. Sanzac, Sabah; SMK Dato’ Panglima Abdullah, Sabah; SMK Abi, Perlis; SMK Iskandar Shah, Melaka; SMK Seri Muda, Pulau Pinang; SMK Seri Kenangan, Johor and SMK. Dato’ Onn, Pulau Pinang. During the convention, each school presented their projects and showcased the projects at the exhibition.

The TEY Programme has benefited many of them throughout the years. To date, after ten years of implementation, a total of 145 schools, involving around 1,160 students and 290 teachers.

The Toyota Eco Youth environment programme is part of the three social pillars of UMW Toyota’s CSR initiatives. The other two pillars are the Road Safety and the philanthropy, which is the highly anticipated Toyota Classics concert.
