UMW Toyota Motor has decided to step outside the boundaries of the school compound for the eleventh edition of its Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) program to include the community surrounding the school for a tougher challenge.
The launch was officiated by Tuan Haji Muhamat Roli Bin Haji Hassan, Director of Co-Curriculum and Arts Department, Ministry of Education, Takashi Hibi, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor and Ismet Suki, President, UMW Toyota Motor.
The TEY program has received good response from the Ministry of Education with a total of 138 schools involved, compromising of over 1,500 students and teachers.
“We are very delighted the TEY program is able to sustain for more than 10 years. With support from the Ministry of Education, this year, we would like to enhance TEY to involve the community around the schools in order to create more awareness on environment conservation,” said Ismet Suki during the launch.
This year’s program will also be supported by Global Environment Center (GEC), a non-profit NGO that will provide assistance to the schools to initiate the environmental project with the community.
The launch of this year’s program was preceded by a series of environment auditing conducted by GEC at Lembah Kiara to identify the sources of pollution in the drains, issues surrounding the wet market as well as river monitoring around the area. A total of 88 students and teachers from eight schools attended the surveying.
Eight schools have been selected by the Ministry of Education to participate in the TEY this year. They are SMKA Maahad Hamidiah, Selangor; SMK Ayer Keroh, Melaka; SMK Bukit Jambul, Pulau Pinang; SMK Pendang, Kedah; SMK Tanjung Datuk, Johor; SMK Chalok, Terengganu; SMK Takis, Sabah and SMK Lundu, Sarawak.
A cash prize of RM7,000 awaits the winner of the TEY while the second and third placed finishers will receive RM5,000 and RM3,000 respectively.
