KUALA LUMPUR: If car makers here continue to ignore government reminders to install airbags in their vehicles, they may be forced by law to do so.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the Government would for now continue to coax local car makers to include airbags.

It is believed that Proton and Perodua were reluctant to do so, as adding airbags would mean having to raise car prices, although their models exported to Europe have airbags.

Chan, who spoke to reporters yesterday after launching the third Golden Bull Awards for the country’s outstanding small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), said consumer awareness was also a catalyst in making car makers comply with safety standards.

“In Europe, for instance, there is no legal requirement for airbags, but consumerism is so widespread there that cars without airbags are not marketable.”

On the high cost of airbags in Malaysia, Chan said this was because only two companies were believed to be making them.

“One way to cut the price is to have more manufacturers,” said Chan, adding that SMEs should venture into airbag production.

On the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, Chan said the Government had approved a masterplan to turn the airport into an international aerospace centre.

He said the making of aircraft parts would be a key activity at the centre, “and this is an area that our SMEs can also move into.”

The Government, he said, would court suitable international companies to locate their aircraft maintenance and overhaul activities at the airport.

“Once we have successfully attracted players from other countries, there would be plenty of business for SMEs involved in this area of work.”

Chan said it would be profitable for SMEs to involve themselves in the aeronautics business as aircraft were made up of many parts sourced from multiple suppliers.

“Take for example the landing gear, which is made up of 1,000 parts that are all sourced from SME manufacturers.”

yeah, there are sporting cars and hot hatch which comes with airbag as standard.

once u get used to airbag equipped car, u juz dont feel safer behind non equipped one.

i think proton can actually ditch the alloy wheels and the stereo for a pair of airbags up front. this way, there wont be price hike. remember, airbag is best if installed as OEM while sport rims and ICE can be bought after market separately and cheaper.

So bottom line is, consumerism doesn't exist in M'sia. But I hope local manufacturers won't stop at just the steering airbag. More fatal accidents today are caused by side collisions.

2 companies in Msia capable of manufacturing airbags? hmm.. Autoliv and err... Johnson Controls maybe. Air bags a freaking expensive for the end user. A replacement for a blown airbag can come up to RM1,XXX depending on what car it is. Say if a driver encounters a situation which causes his airbag to go off, it may cost as much for him to replace the airbag(s) as to repair other damages depending on how many airbags goes off.

well, I'm willing to pay for the airbag if i "might" save my life.

Why not the two companies just make the airbag available as an option?
I'm willing to bet my balls alot of ppl will pay for it

I think we'll see the results of the people's choices when the new P2 car comes out in different variants. Some with ABS/Airbag, some without.

i know where you're coming from but unfortunately, airbags are not so easy to retrofit. airbag as a set has it's own wiring harness, a sensor and fuse. sounds simple enough but it is not easy to calibrate an airbag specific to each car model. besides, u may have an airbag in your steering. but it's not that simple to install an airbag for the passenger seat. does anyone want to cut a hole in their dashboard to accomodate an airbag for the passenger? yet, we're only talking about 2 airbags for the front at this moment. what about curtain and sidewall airbags? the construction of your car's interior has to be altered. thus, we should leave it to the car manufacturers to deal with the airbags.

then again, how many ppl really drive so fast and carelessly to admit they need an airbag for their safety? if safety is priority at all, one would not be driving so fast, would he?

;)
retrofitting without the support of the car manufacturer itself is hard and might be dangerously.

I guess you misinterpreted my intentions.

What I was trying to suggest was that manufacturers start making cars with airbags as an option, and let the consumer choose if they want it.
Someday, sooner or later, they will have to do it, right?

We've heard of NCAP ratings, EU emmission standards and all sorts of consumer protection standarts/ratings. What do we have? ISO??
And our local car manufacturers needs to be told to put airbags?
In the year 2005???

Heck, if seatbelts werent mandatory, you think our local car manufacturer will install it?
