Some diesel powered car owners are saying that their cars are very economical to run...

Petrol powered car owners also saying that their cars are cheaper to run...

In terms of "REAL ECONOMY" meaning the cheapest car to run for say 5 years or so....

Which do you think is?

And why ?:driver::idea::proud::burnout:

Yay! like dis discussion already!

If following European's forum, they say diesel's ROI will be sooner than hybrids (petrol gak kan hehe).

IMHO, the deterrent for us here in Malaysia is our tax which based on cubic capacity. rarely we seen diesel less than 2 liter. Renault Kangoo 1.5 diesel plak is kinda rarely seen for personal ownership.

What I'd like to read is on the service cost between these 2, then hopefully we can get more meaningful comparison rather than relying on FC and roadtax alone

Since many favoured diesel as an economy car....

Well i guess diesel cars car more economy then...

No news from petrol cars owners?

Are they paying through their nose by using petrol driven cars?:bawling::itsme:

diesel, my friend in UK sporting a mk5 2-door golf GTDi..torquey monster

Well I have never own diesel car before cuz never find any which I like as well. But the trend seems to go more toward hybrid cars than diesel. CMIIW though.

The efficiency of diesel technology is fast closing on electric hybrid. It is still very promising compared to electric which is very primitive and short range.

If compared km per RM i think diesel is slightly advantaged

But if compared the overall cost incurred for the used of the petrol & diesel cars,

I think petrol powered cars championed without doubt !

What is the use of saving couple of hundred bucks when at the end of tge day you need to do RM thousands of maintainance repair and service the diesel engine?

You all know how is the quality of our local diesel, and the compatability of our local diesel to the Euro 3 engines...

Also dont forget to add in the high insurance and roadtax...

Also dont forget to add in the cost of frequent breakdown of diesel cars locally...

Also dont forget to add in or rather discount down the second hand value of the diesel cars....

For example a Merz W211 E270 if compared to the Merz W211 240 the value if compared same year for one petrol unit, you can buy one and a half diesel unit.

So the owner of the diesel unit suffered vast losses in terms of the its value..

Yet do you think its really economy?

Had he saved more than the vast depreciation to cover his losses on the value? :stupid:

Diesel cars wins on better mileage & torque no doubt but lost in term of maintenance & car value depreciation...with our current Euro3 diesel, maintenance is more frequent than normal petrol engines because of diesel quality here...

So which one u choose? better mileage but need to pay more? or so so mileage but didn't hurt ur wallet?

Still since now we have hybrids, I would go for Hybrids even though Diesel saves fuels...but Hybrid can do the job now..

i'll pick TDiesel car than TPetrol car if our tax structure were not this idiotic

Diesel fo shizzle yo nizzle, bizzel.

*insert rant bout Msian diesel & car prices here*

Diesel...nuff said....I have had 2 diesel pickups...Storm stolen and the current Frontier as workhorse and heavy duty work....1 full tank I can go like 600+ km...my truck is running an aftermarket air filter with a custom full exhaust and boosting 1 bar, I change the shocks to Gabriel Ultra stiffer rating....current mileage is 167,210km...never did any major service or break down...

Normal service only cost me around 150 for engine oil and oil filter...major service including rear diff oil, trans oil and the transfer case oil...less than 400....fan belt, alternator belt, less than 100 can get...running on timing chain so no timing belt to change....fuel filter only change once...IIRC the price was a bit more expensive compare to cars forget how much was it...fuel injector service once (cleaning),

Tires, I change to 245/60 cost about 300/pcs...It's Yokohama Geolander HTS...

From my own personal experience of owing it for more than 5 years now...I have never ever been failed by this truck SERIOUSLY...the power, torque and responsiveness of the engine is something you couldn't get from a normal petrol engine...i go up mountain down the sea with this car during my period of owning it...the most I like is going up hill roads, Fraser, Genting, Cameron...no need turn off AC just whack all the way up...all the petrol cars really no match and have no choice but to give way....except those high power ones la...Hahahaha....The best part, I've hauled several times 600kg (1 pallet of goods) to KLIA and sometimes Port Klang and can't find any sign of underpower....If you ask me, do I spend a lot to maintain it...NO...it's just like owning a petrol car...does it break down a lot.....er...it never break down....diesel engines are very tough you know..especially the engine block because they are built tough to withstand the super high compression of diesel engine..16.5:1...

Now I drive petrol car and diesel also...I'm having a 2.4L petrol car...and still I complain that it feels less punchy than a diesel....I've been to Europe for a lot of times and you will know why over there their sales of Diesel car is way better than petrol....and they seems not too fond about Hybrids....Diesel technology these days are moving very fast ahead.....is just that Malaysia still can't get into the trend...just look at the Ford Focus Diesel....partly also due to the diesel fuel here...

Hope this info is helpful to any interested future diesel owner....

20 years back yes!

Diesel is KING OF THE ROAD !

Those days diesel was about about half price of petrol cost as per litre

Today....

Diesel is only mere 10 or 12 cents cheaper as per litre...

BTW taxi drivers especially outstation taxi drivers also shook their heads and given up diesel cars some 15 years or more ago...:bawling:

the tax isnt dat much considering its discounted 50% for a euro 1 (and above) emission engine, and plus if it is dat expensive, it will be nuthing compared to the saving u will get through the year. just imagine a full tank of a hilux can make a return trip kl~alor star, with balance. and dats not the most frugal diesel in the market..

I think we need to look at the trend from a wider scope not just in Malaysia....now almost all taxis, runs on NGV might still have a few running petrol and diesel...buses also running NGV and diesel...

The price difference of Diesel and RON95 is 10cents to be exact but I use RON97 most of the time and use RON95 for MyVi and Saga...but the km/l I get out from diesel is more....I know this because I owned many cars from petrol to diesel..from 1.0L all the way up to 2.5L....

Just take example 1.3 Myvi I can get good km/l in city driving...but if I hit the highway....not good especially long distance....while for diesel city and highway driving I can get really good km/l. Just give you an idea how much diesel I only use going from Nilai to Cameron, drop by Ipoh then back to Nilai...I went with a full tank...I only refuel once on my way back at the NS highway Petronas station after Nilai toll...

Now I have added 2 Hybrids into my garage...and of course the Lexus and Prius sure have better km/l than my diesel....then in my 2nd place is the pickup....for the petrol it has to be the 3rd place....

I know how much I spent on fuel for my cars because my home minister do our house accounts on a monthly basis.

before I own a diesel..I also very skeptical about diesel one....hear ppl say not good la, service expensive la, have more problems la..this and that bla bla bla....but after I owned it myself it opened up a whole new scope.....

I believe maintenance is important to keep any car at good shape be it diesel or petrol....if a diesel engine is maintain properly it can perform very well also.....end of the day, to buy a diesel or petrol you need to see how's your driving mileage.....a lot of long distance and very frequent travel..diesel will be my choice....if short driving and very seldom use the car then petrol because diesel if you put it stagnant for too long it will absorb moisture....

Joe - well said. Your elaborated views on diesel are purely based on your personal experiences through owning diesel powered cars. To be honest, I myself was a skeptic when it comes to diesel cars. After sitting in one, I decided to get one. Yes, the diesel car prices are lower than petrol powered ones but it works towards 'believers' advantage. Yes, these cars failed bcoz of bla bla bla.. the thing is, the ratio of diesel car owners to petrol car owners are low. Not many own diesel, so when some of these breaks down they are deemed to be a majority. However, looking at some break down cases, these are highly due to the fact that they are used to the max and when wear and tear kicks in - some of these owners tried to save a few bucks here and there and service it way beyond recommended figures. Hence - issues arises.

I bought myself an M Spec-ed E90 320D. I never looked back since. Performance wise, it's on par with an F30 328i and fuel consumption wise, on city driving 600-650, outstation 1200-1300km per tank. I pump RM 101.00 of diesel for full tank.

It may sound a bit louder than its petrol counterparts but hey, it out performs them in all aspects.

As for maintenance, it's covered by BMW for 5 years. Even if it's not, well, from what I know, oil filter is about RM90-110.00 , it needs 6 litres of engine oil and diesel filter costs RM180.00. Yeah, is it expensive to maintain? it's up to u folks to decide.

As for resale values, tell me - which car does not depreciate? Want a car that doesn't depreciate? go buy an AE86 or a Corolla KE70 with 4AGE inside. It will never depreciate, or better still - go buy a house or some property. The value will only go up (for now).

My 2.5L diesel can go up to 600km for highway and maybe around 500km for city driving. For me that is a good mileage I can get with one full tank.

As per ratio mileage:service, I'd say it a bit cheaper compared to the petrol vehicle since I got better mileage/liter.

Why settle for a 1.6l small sedan (Polo Sedan) when you can get Hilux 2.5 VNT for the same amount of money? With current mileage that you piled on your current ride, the diesel higher cost won't matter much in 3 - 5 years time..... plus you get a bigger boot

Heard this conversation between my boss and his expat friend huhuhu

* he has a point though *
