The fifth installment of our favourite car culture movie series, dubbed Fast Five, of the Fast and the Furious series, will be revving into cinemas in the middle of the year. Aiming to top all the previous movies in terms of machinery, Fast Five has a number of extreme machines amongst the cast.

The lucky folks over at Inside Line managed to get some one-on-one time with Dennis McCarthy, the man responsible for all the vehicles in the movie, to get the low-down on some of the cars that will find themselves being piloted by Vin Diesel or Paul Walker.

First up is the one-off custom tube-framed Frankenstien off-road hauler. 'Mongo,' as it has been named, is used to assist Diesel and Walker in the stealing exotic cars off a moving train. It sports a 600hp Chevy V8 engine wth up to 18-inches of suspension travel to tame the dirt roads. McCarthy also mentioned that being a fully customised creation, Mongo was built robust enough to not need a stunt double, pulling off all his own stunts that includes a 23-metre jump.

Next in line is the 1970 Dodge Charger that was first used by Diesel in the fourth installment of the series. Specced as a 900hp blown monster in the movie with a supercharged Hemi lump, production costs meant that in reality, it was powered by a 400hp Chevy mill topped with a BDS blower purely for cosmetics.

Last on the list is one of the most anticipated cars of the movie, a replica of the 1965 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport that is a kit car put together by Mongoose Motorsports. Power is courtesy of a Chevy big-block engine pushing out 600hp mated to a Borg Warner Super T-10 four-speed transmission. All that power is hooked to the asphalt through the suspension bits of a C3 Corvette which clearly struggles to modulate all that force.

After shooting was completed, all the three cars were still in running condition, albeit nowhere near the condition they left the factory floor in. Enjoy the vids and mark your calendars for 5 May as that's the premiere for the movie here.
