Entering its third year on the trot, the Asian Auto Fuel Efficiency Awards is still the automotive industry’s sole awards recognising fuel efficient vehicles and the country’s oldest automotive magazine recently honoured the most frugal vehicles of 2010.

A total of 57 awards in 19 categories were handed out to various manufacturers in the hopes that it would spur them on to develop and introduce more fuel efficient technologies into our market.

“It is our aim that this annual Asian Auto Fuel Efficiency Awards would be the platform to offer Malaysians better options when purchasing their next car and to bring Malaysian motoring in line with our north and south neighbours who for years have been enjoying the latest models before us. As such, every legitimate car sold in Malaysia was included in the audit this year and we got some rather surprising results that show us how petrol engines are starting to creep up to hybrid cars in terms of fuel efficiency,” said Daniel Fernandez, editor of Asian Auto.

The categories up for grabs were compact city car, compact premium city car, family car, premium family car, luxury family car, executive car, premium executive car, super saloon, super sports coupe, performance car, pickup truck, compact MPV, luxury MPV, compact and luxury SUV as well as supercar.

Among the big winners on the night were Mercedes and Audi with the most awards while Hyundai and Mazda were not far behind either, a fine example of how the gap between premium brands and non-premium brands is shrinking.
