Top 10 Budget Japanese Retro rides under RM10,000

welcome to the dark side, where driving old school, is cool!

do it like pulp fiction! those men in black are awesome

nice..

when i read the title, i thought the KE70 would be on the top 3.. but seeing it as the winner makes me wanna cry..

hahahahaha

i ranked the list above, based on desirability, high modability, coolness and ease of access in getting one of these on classifieds

i mean no doubt, in malaysia, the ke series are much wanted. i bet in years to come, the ae82, ae92, ae101 are within 10k budget!

Most of these retro rwd rides needed lots of time, money and customisation due to difficulity to get parts or parts are not produce anymore. So I wouldn't recomen this types of cars to new 1st time buyers jst bcause the purchase price is cheap.
But as a matter of fact it needs tonne of attention and money on the body work, interior, chassis and engine to make it properly restore and road worthy.

A better bet is those honda ef/eg, toyota se/city or protons which are much more cheaper to maintain and get parts. Only hard core ol skoolers will appreciate.
Those bought cheaply will need work and money to get to expectation. And most unfinish project will be sold half way. Furthermore how many of those really nice one u see selling at less than 10k let alone 5k.

well thats why the toyota ke70 is top on the list, parts are available, its like any given corolla. the other cars would be a hassle with parts, other than the honda i believe.

however, if you could find a car thats cheap, chances that it has problems, rust, engine issues and so forth. do set aside some money if you want to do up the car. when ur buying a 90s ride, chances it has rust and engine issues. the only difference is that, with the money spent, u could paint the car to anything u want and have the rust issues sorted out, unlike cars u already could buy straight from the car dealership, wont know what kind of rusts goes under it

No retro celica dragon on the list?.... :)

main focus was 10k, dragon celica, aka ta22, 23, 28 series are touching 10k and usually in bad condition

My dad got a Toyota Corolla and i grew up with it,
then in 1992 he sold it off and bought an Iswara and use it till now.

the iswara is a reliable car like the toyota, sadly he traded it from a toyota to a proton.

then again, the only issue with the iswara, is that its got no cool factor, being a common taxi car in KL

At least the Iswara aeroback is cooler than cab sedan. It serves me for good 10 years, with many extras put into it. Maybe it won't be as classic as what the Jap classic but I'll keep it indefinitely till I run out of parking space.

Well the Proton Iswara was a facelfift to the Proton Saga, which actually was a rebadge version of the Mitsubishi Lancer Fiore. Should you revert its looks back to the 80s, you'd have yourself a clean 80's Japanese ride, hahaha.

Owning a KE70, I was naturally biased and expectant. I digested each of your comments on your choices and was very pleased to note that the Corolla is deservedly no. 1 on your list. While I must of course agree, the note to prospective buyers is that the cost of drivetrain parts is increasingly prohibitive and somewhat, frankly, insane.

yeah thats why i said, u could buy a stock ke70 and still run with the 4k engine, till your rich enough to modify. a car is still a car, like it or not, LOL, even if its not filled with modifcation parts yet.

Indeed, the 4k is severely underrated. Slap on a recon / new carbie (forget tuning the ori junk) and you're in business! Everyone lusts for the 4A-GE but you'd need cams, adj. pulleys and a piggy to realise it's true high revving potential. Just don't cry when you go shopping around for the inevitable replacement crown and pinion ahahahh!

Probably the best ever local technical bible I've come across for the KE70 (I don't know him, but have found this site super helpful):

CAR SECTION
