Next year’s Formula 1 race in Singapore has been confirmed to take place on September 28, 2008. The event will be the first in Formula 1 history to take place in the evening.
Scheduled to start at 8pm, organizers have been working overtime to ensure that lighting for the race is as effective as possible. The brightness level on the street track is expected to be four times brighter than normal stadiums. However, organizers have confirmed that the run off areas would not be as bright as the rest of the track. This is to avoid confusing drivers.
Light angels would have to be placed in such a way so that in the event a car spins and ends up facing the wrong direction, the driver’s vision will not be impaired. It has also been revealed that the lights will only be on one side if the track. This is to minimize glare for television cameras. Another reason why organizers chose to have lights on only one side of the track is because the height of an F1 car is only 1 metre, therefore the shadows cast would be minimal.
