Wednesday, June 07, 2006 Struggle to strengthen Malay economy a Holy War, says PM (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Tuesday the struggle to strengthen the economy of the Malays is a holy war that has to become a national mission. He said that only after the economy has been strengthened would the sovereignty of the Malays in the country be more meaningful. Therefore, the Malays must change their mindset and attitude to raise themselves to a higher level, he said. He said this could be brought about if the Malays adopted the approach of helping the Malays. "In this mission, we have to reduce the gap between groups. We have to help the weak groups to become strong," said Abdullah, who is also Umno president, when launching the Gagasan Badan Ekonomi Melayu (GABEM), an umbrella body initiated by Umno that encompasses organisations associated with the economic upliftment of the Malays, here. This was because the weak groups would be unable to contribute to the overall strength in ensuring that the objective of economically strong Malays was achieved, he said. The prime minister said he was determined to lead the Malays to become a developed community by 2020 by ensuring that every opportunity did not go unutilised. He said the government had drawn up programmes for the purpose through the Ninth Malaysia Plan as the first phase, and stressed that there has to be effective implementation. As such, he said, the implementation process had to be planned thoroughly so that problems such as malpractices and abuse of power did not arise. "When these (problems) crop up, the objectives will not be achieved and the programmes drawn up will become useless," he said. Abdullah and Deputy Prime Minister and Umno Deputy President Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak were appointed patrons of GABEM at the function that was attended by more than 3,000 Umno members as well as corporate leaders.
